🌍 How did Egypt qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Placed in CAF Group A alongside Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti, Egypt navigated qualifying with authority, finishing five points clear of 2nd-placed Burkina Faso.

The Pharaohs were unbeaten across their 10 matches, winning eight and finishing comfortably at the top of the group, scoring 20 times and conceding just twice. Qualification was officially sealed with a 3-0 victory over Djibouti, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice and Ibrahim Adel claiming the other.

It was a fitting moment for their captain, who finished the campaign with nine goals, a tally only bettered across African qualifying by Algeria's Mohamed Amoura.

👔 Who is the Egypt manager at the World Cup 2026?

Few figures in African football carry the weight of history that Hossam Hassan does. Egypt's all-time leading scorer with 68 goals in 169 appearances, Hassan won three Africa Cup of Nations titles and scored the decisive goal that sent Egypt to the 1990 World Cup.

Now he returns to football's biggest stage as their coach and is the first Egyptian ever to reach the World Cup as both player and coach. Since taking charge in February 2024, Egypt have won 10, drawn four and lost just one match.

🔎 Who are Egypt's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Mohamed Salah

Arguably the greatest player Egypt have ever produced arrives at what is widely expected to be his final World Cup, with plenty still to prove on the international stage. Salah has 67 goals in 115 appearances for Egypt, sitting just two behind manager Hossam Hassan's all-time national record. He was Egypt's standout performer throughout qualifying, and, at the 2018 World Cup in Russia he scored twice. Defences will be built around stopping him, but that in itself creates an opportunity for those around him.

Omar Marmoush

While Egypt will hope Salah provides the goals, they will look to Marmoush to provide creativity in the attacking areas. The Manchester City forward is rapidly approaching 50 caps having only made his debut five years ago. His ability to link play, drive at defenders and arrive in dangerous areas makes him the ideal complement to Salah, and the spaces that open up when opponents focus on Egypt's captain could be where Marmoush does his best work. A player very much in his prime at 27.

Emam Ashour

The heartbeat of Egypt's midfield, the 28-year-old Al Ahly man is equally comfortable operating as a central midfielder or in more advanced areas. His versatility has constantly been leaned heavily on by Hossam Hassan during his tenure. Tenacious, skilful and rarely wasteful in possession, Ashour makes the Egypt midfield tick, and his ability to play key passes makes him far more than a workhorse. He featured in all but one game at the last AFCON for Egypt, showing just how indispensable he has become to the North African side.

Best Free Bets, Offers & Betting Sites for World Cup 2026

The World Cup is the best time to create a new bookmaker account because the Bookmaker Offers are much better. Andy and the Andy's Bet Club experts have tried and tested the Free Bets, and here are their favourites:

Egypt are 300/1 with bet365. Players like Salah and Marmoush are the envy of money frontlines in the tournament, but ultimately 300/1 does accurately reflect their chances.

No, they've got a good chance of getting out of the group. But they don't have the quality across the pitch to compete towards the later rounds.

Egypt are in Group G with Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.

Belgium v Egypt: Monday 15th June at 8pm BST.

New Zealand v Egypt: Monday 22nd June at 2am BST.

Egypt v Iran: Saturday 27th June at 4am BST.

Mostafa Mohamed could come into the frontline, and it would put a lot more importance on Marmoush's contributions in the final third.

Salah will be on penalties when he's on the pitch. He'll likely get first priority on free kicks as well, but Marmoush is also a threat from them.
