Group B Preview
Group B promises to be a competitive group, in which three of the four nations are returning to the World Cup finals after playing the 2022 edition. Travel fatigue will play its role in this group, given that the six matches will be played across five different venues, ranging from Toronto to Inglewood, Las Vegas.
The only nation in this pool with any particular World Cup pedigree is Switzerland, who have reached the quarter-finals of the competition on three occasions, though their most recent trip to the final eight was back in 1954. This will be the Swiss’ 13th trip to the final – comfortably more than their rivals combined.
None of the other three nations have been beyond the groups, though that will change for at least one of them.

🇨🇦 Canada
Canada come into their home World Cup aiming to make a positive impression and are certainly better armed to do so than on their previous trips to the finals in 1986 and 2022.
They melted in the heat of Qatar when placed in a fiendish group along with Morocco, Croatia and Belgium, conceding seven times as they lost all three games.
This time around, the cards are in their favour. Home advantage means that their travel schedule is far lighter than that of their rivals, with one hop from Toronto to Vancouver all that is expected of them. The climate will also be to their liking in those venues, with none of the baking Californian heat that their rivals face.
Spearheaded by talents at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, this is a group that expects to reach the knockout stages and then, hopefully, trouble some of the big guns.
🇨🇭 Switzerland
The Swiss are favourites to win this group, with what on paper appears to be the most complete squad of players. They qualified past a dangerous Sweden side, notably beating them 2-0 away and then 4-1 at home.
Indeed, goals have been a feature of many of Switzerland’s recent games, with a 4-3 defeat to Germany in a March friendly indicating that they have impressive firepower in their ranks. The four they conceded was out of character, too. In qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, they conceded only two goals in six games.
Breel Embolo continues to be their danger man. The Rennes striker scored five times in qualification. Yet winger Dan Ndoye is also a huge threat; not only did he score three goals, he assisted three more. This combination will be key for the Swiss, whose big tournament pedigree was underlined at Euro 2024, when they went undefeated against Germany and Italy before only losing to England on penalties in the quarters. They are not to be underestimated.
🇶🇦 Qatar
As hosts of the 2022 World Cup, there was no need for Qatar to qualify for the competition, so this is the first time they have earned their place at a World Cup. They did so by going through the fiercely competitive AFC qualifiers, overcoming Oman and UAE in the fourth round. The dice, however, were loaded in their favour given all three of those group games were played in Qatar, with the host nation also benefitting from additional rest days compared to their rivals.
The squad that they are taking is drawn almost exclusively from the Qatar Stars League, with only Homam Ahmed (who spent time on loan in the Spanish second tier from Qatari side Al-Duhail this season just gone) recently playing outside of his home country. But there is a hope that this knowledge of each other will help bond the team.
Experience will certainly not be an issue. There are six players in this squad who boast over 100 caps. Look out for defender Boualem Khoukhi, who has 20 international goals to his name.
🇧🇦 Bosnia
Playing in the World Cup finals for a second time in the nation’s short history (part of Yugoslavia up to 1992), Bosnia are aiming to make more of an impact than they did in 2014, when they came up marginally short in Brazil. A 1-0 loss to Nigeria consigned them to elimination after only two matches in South America, but they battled impressively through to the play-offs to reach this tournament.
Bosnia’s record in qualifying was unspectacular. After winning their first four games, they would win only one of their last six over 90 minutes. In the play-offs, they beat both Wales and Italy on penalties, showing that even if this side might lack quality, there is no shortage of mental fortitude in their ranks.
Remarkably, Edin Dzeko continues to be their talisman. Now over 40, he has 73 international goals and nearly 150 appearances for his country to his credit. The scorer of six of Bosnia’s 18 qualifying goals, he is looking to go out with a bang.
