Franjo Ivanovic to Score Anytime

I can’t believe that there were no goals in the first leg of this tie, I tipped two goalscorers in this fixture last week but neither side could find the clinical edge despite nine shots on target between the sides.

I’m still confident that the goals will eventually come in this tie and have turned to Franjo Ivanovic as much choice to score anytime here.

Benfica have been experimenting with a front of Ivanovic and Pavlidis and it’s been working pretty well, Ivanovic scored against Tondela in his most recent appearance for Benfica, he netted 20 goals for Union St Gilloise in Belgium last season which is what tempted Benfica to sign him.

His link up with Pavlidis offers Benfica a really direct threat which can unsettle a Fenerbahce backline that conceded four goals in the last qualifying round against Feyenoord.

Over 1.5 Benfica Cards

Benfica received three yellow cards and a red card in the first leg clash between these sides. They committed 18 fouls in the game which is an excellent record when looking to back them for a couple of cards here alongside our goalscorer pick.

Benfica picked up 28 yellow cards across their 12 games in the Champions League last season (2.33 per game) and we can expect a similar level of aggression here from the Portuguese side given their performance in the first leg.

  • Benfica easily sailed through the last round qualifying, beating Nice 4-0 over two legs

  • Fenerbahce had to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg against Feyenoord in the last round of qualifying, but won the second leg 5-2

  • Fenerbahce started their domestic season with a 0-0 draw against Goztepe while Benfica claimed a 1-0 win away against Estrela in their first game of the Liga Portugal season

🔴 Benfica's home advantage could be crucial

Benfica would have been happy to get out of Turkey with a 0-0 draw following being cut down to 10 men in the 71st minute as Luis Fiorentina received a second yellow card. It was a disciplined away performance from Bruno Lage’s side who now have the edge coming into the home tie.

It was important that Benfica didn’t capitulate in the first leg as Feyenoord did on their trip to Turkey to take on Jose Mourinho’s side. Benfica have now navigated the more challenging part of the tie and can rely on their strong home form here to carry them over the line.

Benfica won 14 of their 17 home games in Liga Portugal last season, scoring 52 goals across these matches.

🟡 Uphill task for Fenerbahce on the road

Jose Mourinho’s side followed up their 0-0 draw with Benfica with a 3-1 home win over Kocaelispor in the Turkish Super Lig which is a result that should bring them some momentum ahead of this clash. They should have really made more of the man advantage they had for the last 20 minutes of the game in the first leg, but have now left themselves with an uphill task if they are to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Fenerbahce lost the away tie in the last round of qualifying against Feyenoord. They struggled to create chances and fell to a 2-1 defeat, I get the feeling that the first leg was crucial for Fenerbahce's chances of coming through this tie and now they will face an uphill battle to try and get back to Europe’s elite table.

📊 Benfica v Fenerbahce H2H

As well as the first leg meeting, these sides also met in a pre-season friendly back in July, with Benfica coming away 3-2 winners.
