The standout clash from the final stage of Champions League qualifying sees Fenerbahce take on Benfica with both sides feeling as though they belong on Europe’s biggest stage. Below is all the context and stats you'll need for the game, as well as my two picks.

Jhon Duran to score anytime

I still can’t quite believe that Jhon Duran has ended up at Fenerbahce with the talent he has. He had four shots and scored in Fenerbahce’s 5-2 win over Feyenoord in the last round of qualifying with the Turkish side overturning a 2-1 defeat from the first leg. Duran should continue to get service to score goals here, Fenerbahce scored 42 goals across their 18 home games last season (2.33 per game) and their performance in the last round against Feyenoord would suggest that the home leg of this tie is crucial to Mourinho’s sides’ chances of getting into the Champions League this season.

Vangelis Pavlidis to score anytime

Feyenoord managed to score four goals against Fenerbahce across the two legs which is a record that will encourage Benfica, especially with the clinical nature of Vangelis Pavlidis. The Greek forward scored 29 goals across all competitions last season with seven of these goals coming in his 12 appearances in the Champions League last term. This record shows that Pavlidis can be a real threat at this level especially seeing as Benfica enter this first leg on the back of a five game winning run, which included back to back 2-0 wins over Nice in the last round of qualifying. They also faced Fenerbahce in a friendly as part of this run and ran out 3-2 winners, adding further evidence that we can expect goals here.

🟡 Fenerbahce's new signings can make the difference

Fenerbahce’s main aim this season will be to win the Turkish Super Lig having finished second in each of the last four seasons. They drew their opening game of the season away from home against Goztepe but could have come away with all three points with Anderson Talisca missing a penalty in the 94th minute.

Despite their priority being to win the Turkish top flight this season, Jose Mourinho would love for his side to be back in the Champions League after competing in the Europa League last season. They’ve made statement signings in the window such as Milan Skriniar and Jhon Duran which should be able to take them to the next level, both domestically and in Europe.

🔴 Benfica on a strong run of form

Benfica are really a side that belong in the Champions League. They’ve competed amongst Europe’s top sides in each of the last four seasons and also featured at the Club World Cup over the summer. They started their domestic campaign with a 1-0 win over Estrela da Amadora as they look to end the recent dominance of Sporting in the Portuguese top flight.

Benfica easily dispatched Nice over two legs in the last round of qualifying, coming away 2-0 winners in both games. This is likely to be the tougher of the two legs with how strong Fenerbahce can be at home as we saw in their 5-2 demolition of Feyenoord in the last round. However, the chances that the Dutch side had over the two legs will be enough to encourage Benfica that they can get something out of this first leg.

📊 Fenerbahce v Benfica H2H

These sides played in a friendly just a few weeks ago with Benfica running out 3-2 winners.

Prior to that the last head to head meeting between the sides was also part of Champions League qualification in 2018 with Benfica coming away 2-1 winners over the two legs.
