Frankfurt are a really exciting side to watch, but their approach isn’t really suited to the demands of the Champions League. Frankfurt have been hammered by Liverpool and Atletico Madrid already in Europe’s premium club competition. That being said, I wouldn’t expect Frankfurt to change their risk filled approach too much, with head coach, Dino Toppmoller, believing that this system is the best way forward for Frankfurt.

Atlanta have been more controlled in their performances in Europe so far, and have benefitted from this with two wins from their four matches. Their games have been more low scoring, but have allowed Atalanta to stay in games, where Frankfurt may have been more adrift. Atalanta’s 1-0 win over Marseille last time out in the Champions League was an excellent example of this, with Atalanta scoring a last minute winner after clinging on for long periods of the game.

Frankfurt enter this contest having avoided defeat across their last five matches in all competitions. Three of these games have ended in draws, but Frankfurt have still maintained their tendency to see high scoring matches, with a 4-3 win over Koln at the weekend to warm up for this clash.

Atalanta have struggled in recent weeks, coinciding with the dismissal of head coach Ivan Juric. This appointment never made any sense to me, with a brief positive stint at Torino doing a lot of the heavy lifting for Juric when being considered for the position. His dismissal should mean that we see Atalanta return to a more exciting side to watch, with Juric intentionally capping the attacking potential of the side in the name of defensive solidity.

Frankfurt will line up in a 3-4-2-1 here, with this being quite an attacking shape as the wingbacks are encouraged to join the attack. This can leave Frankfurt with only two men at the back when they go forward, explaining why their matches have been so end-to-end this campaign.

That being said, it looks like Dino Toppmoller has accepted that he will have to make certain sacrifices if his side want to compete in the Champions League. These were on display in Frankfurt’s 0-0 draw against Napoli in their most recent Champions League assignment, with the German side registering an xG of just 0.36 on that occasion.

Atalanta are set to lineup in a similar shape with the 3-4-3 structure being a continuation of the superb patterns that Gian Piero Gasperini had put together during his time at the club. Atalanta’s front three carry a real attacking threat with Ademola Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere flanking Nikola Krstovic, who earned his move to Atalanta following a few solid campaigns with Lecce.

Frankfurt are set to be without Can Uzun for this game which is a big blow. He is one of the most exciting prospects in the Bundesliga and has already registered 10 goal contributions this term.
