Rangers have shown increased attacking quality in recent matches, scoring 12 goals across their last four matches in all competitions after being knocked out of the Champions League by Dinamo Kyiv.

Although the Gers overcame Dundee 3-0 at the weekend in the League Cup, they gave up some big chances that a more clinical team would surely have finished off. Goalkeeper Jack Butland, criticised for his recent form, produced a handful of excellent stops but a stronger opponent would not have given him so much of a chance.

Malmo are a very capable team going forwards, particularly at home. In league play this season, they have scored 31 times in 11 matches.

The Swedish side might have been shut out in both games against Sparta Prague in Champions League qualifying, but their previous four matches were all high-scoring affairs with goals at both ends of the field.

It is also likely that both teams have earmarked this as a game that is very winnable. As such, there should be ambition shown to get the points from both clubs, making for a spectacle that is likely to become open at some stage.

Dessers is Rangers’ leading scoring in all competitions this season with seven goals. No one else in Clement’s squad has more than two. The Nigerian comes into this game with a good deal of confidence following a double against Dundee at the weekend.

He is taking more shots and hitting the target more than any other Rangers player. He has 2.95 shots per 90 in the Scottish Premiership this season and 1.82 on target.

Dessers has at least one shot on target in each of Rangers’ five Premiership matches this season, including two away to Celtic. He has already shown his capabilities being a major threat away from home in Europe this season when he scored away against Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League qualifying.

Was replaced midway through the second half against Dundee at the weekend, which suggests that he will be fit enough to play the vast majority of this game.

Isaac Kiese Thelin may not have scored in Europe so far this season, but the Malmo centre-forward leads his club in terms of both shots and shots on target in the Allsvenskan this season, posting averages of 3.76 shots per 90, with 1.78 of these hitting the target on average.

He comes into this game high on confidence after posting five shots on target plus two goals across his last five games.

Kiese Thelin is undoubtedly Malmo’s most in-form attacker. While Erik Botheim, who could be on the bench for this clash, and Hugo Bolin have struggled to get shots away at all in recent matches, the striker has had 10 attempts across the last three matches.

Rangers have struggled to defend crosses this season, and this is one area in which the striker specialises in. This could be a tactic employed by the hosts in this game to exploit a weakness of the visiting team.

Rangers will fancy themselves to be able to get numerous shots on target on the Malmo goal in this match, with Clement’s outfit boasting a strong track record of threatening their opponents net directly this season.

After a slow start to the season offensively, the Ibrox team have picked up a head of steam. Across their last seven fixtures in the Premiership, League Cup and Champions League, they have managed to hit the target at least six times in every game with the exception of their 3-0 loss against Celtic at the beginning of the month.

Malmo might have a strong record when it comes to keeping clean sheets but they are giving up a steady stream of shots, with at least four hitting their target in four of their last six domestic games. Rangers will feel they are better than anything Malmo have faced domestically.

Malmo gave up four shots on target in both matches against Sparta Prague and notably seven in the second leg of their clash against PAOK, although that went to extra-time.

Of Rangers players who have played at least 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership this season, Cerny stands third in terms of fouls committed per 90 with 1.85 per game.

The Czech Republic international has committed fouls in four of the last five games that data is available for. The exception was a clash against Motherwell, in which he was taken off after less than an hour purely because he was still building up fitness following his summer transfer.

Cerny notably conceded three free-kicks in Premiership clash against Celtic, which is the most comparable game to the one that the Gers face in Malmo.

Will go head-to-head with Malmo left-back Busanello, who has been fouled 25 times in Allsvenskan play at a rate of 1.38 per 90. He has been fouled in his last seven matches in which data is available for, suggesting that Cerny’s price to commit a single foul is huge.

Diomande will be asked to do much of the defensive work at the heart of the Rangers midfield, and with this role comes the risk of giving away fouls on a regular basis.

The Ivory Coast international has given away at least two fouls in every Premiership match that he has played at least 70 minutes in: Hearts, Motherwell and Dundee United have been his victims.

With 2.37 fouls per 90, he has the highest figure among Rangers’ regular starters with the exception of Tom Lawrence on 2.70.

Diomande should be expected to play the vast majority of this game after he was rested for the weekend’s clash against Dundee. Has had his minutes managed this season because of fixture congestion and international duty, yet he has started all the key fixtures.

Malmo’s main foul-winning players are all concentrated in the centre of the park. Anders Christiansen (1.55 fouls won per 90), Sergio Pena (1.27) and Lasse Berg Johnsen (0.81) will all feature in Diomande’s vicinity and all have the capacity to pick up free kicks.

Similarly, Taha Ali (2.13) is likely to come off the bench and operate in an attacking midfield role, potentially putting him up against a tiring Diomande.

As well as being Malmo’s biggest goal threat due to his physicality, Thelin is also the home player likeliest to get himself into regular foul trouble because of the style of play that he employs. He is liable to tangle regularly with Rangers’ centre-backs.

Although he has been booked only three times in Allsvenskan play this season, he has committed 32 fouls. This translates to 2.04 fouls per 90 on average, putting him top of the charts for the Swedish side in terms of their regulars.

Prior to the weekend’s clash against Hacken, in which he did not give away a single free kick, Thelin had committed two or more fouls in five successive matches, including both legs of the Champions League play-off against Sparta Prague.

He typically plays the duration of Malmo’s matches, so the prospects of him being replaced before the end of the game are limited. This maximises his prospects of committing two fouls or more in this clash.

Dujon Sterling posts 1.6 fouls per 90 in the Scottish Premiership this season, putting him fourth among Rangers players to have featured in at least 90 minutes of league action this season.

Sterling has committed at least one foul in three of his four league appearances for Rangers this season.

The former Chelsea youth finds his task in this encounter made far more complicated by the fact that he is set to be shunted into the left-back role. It is one that he has played before, yet he has grown used to playing in central midfield for Rangers, so would be understandable if his adaption here was more complicated and he gave up additional free kicks in this area.

Malmo have shown little consistency in selection on the right side of their attack, yet Soren Rieks has started in this role in the past couple of European matches. The Dane wins 1.3 fouls per 90 domestically, suggesting that he will give Sterling a test defensively in this clash.
