Newcastle have been pretty solid in the Champions League so far this season, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting 12th in the league phase, and still in with a chance of progressing to the knockout stages automatically with a few wins in their final two matches of the league phase.

The Magpies have netted 13 goals across their six games in the Champions League this term, with six of these coming across their three matches at St James’ Park. Newcastle have been much stronger when playing at home this season, with 22 of their 32 goals in the Premier League coming at home (68%).

They take on a PSV side that have shown that they can compete against Premier League sides through their 4-1 win at Anfield in the Champions League last year. PSV have seen BTTS in each of their last four matches ahead of this clash, notably winning all four of these games.

PSV have seen 26 goals across their six matches in the league phase of the Champions League so far (4.33 per game), so they are one of the most entertaining sides in the competition, which is a trait that can help to inform BTTS in this clash.

Bruno Guimaraes has been Newcastle’s most important player so far this season and has stepped up with goal contributions when Newcastle’s forward players have failed to deliver. Guimaraes is enjoying his best scoring season in the Premier League, having netted eight goals across his 21 appearances, eclipsing his previous record of seven goals.

Guimaraes has also pitched in with three assists across these games, taking his tally to 11 goal contributions across 20 starts in the Premier League - the most goal contributions of any Newcastle player this season. These numbers show the impact that Guimaraes is having in the final third this term, though he does need to translate that form to the Champions League.

Guimaraes is yet to register a goal contribution in the Champions League this term, but his underlying numbers are positive and indicate that a goal contribution isn’t too far away. Guimaraes has created 10 chances across his six appearances in the Champions League this term, resulting in an expected assist tally of 0.83.

Mauro Junior is a very versatile player who can operate in either the fullback position or as a holding midfielder. He’s set to line up in the middle of the park here, pitting him up against one of the best midfield trios in Europe. 

Junior has committed four fouls across his five starts in the Champions League this season (0.80 per 90), with this record earning him one caution, which was sustained against Atletico Madrid - a game that saw Junior line up as a holding midfielder.

His main opponent here is likely to be Bruno Guimaraes, who has won 10 fouls across his six appearances in the Champions League this term (1.81 per 90) and a further 46 fouls across his 20 appearances in the Premier League (2.25 per 90). 

Junior has picked up a further two cautions in the Eredivisie this term across his 14 appearances in the competition. It is quite likely that Newcastle win the physical battle in midfield, which places Junior perfectly to pick up a caution in this contest. 

Dennis Man has been a great signing for PSV, with the Romanian winger registering 12 goal contributions across his 21 appearances in all competitions this term. He’s scored twice in the Champions League across his four starts, with both of those goals coming in PSV’s 6-2 win over Napoli.

Man has had six shots across his four starts in the Champions League this term (1.54 per 90) and has seen three of those efforts find the target (0.77 per 90). Man’s numbers are even stronger in the Eredivisie with a shot average of 2.21 per 90 and a shot on target average of 0.84 per 90.
