In this article...

PSG to Win

Having made a perfect start to their Ligue 1 campaign, I struggle to see Atalanta causing PSG too much trouble at the Parc des Princes.

Luis Enrique’s side have strung together four straight wins, finding the net ten times and conceding on only three occasions - all during their chaotic 6-3 victory over Toulouse before the break. Having kept clean sheets in the rest, PSG look every bit as complete as they did last season, and we all know how that ended.

As for Atalanta, only last weekend did they manage their first Serie A victory, having drawn each of their opening two. To make matters worse, their shaky start can hardly be excused by the calibre of opposition, with their opponents occupying the bottom three spots in the league, and being the 1st, 3rd, and 5th favourites to go down.

Both Teams to Score

It doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to picture this being a high-scoring affair, and the stats certainly back up this assertion.

Despite the vast chasm in quality between PSG and the majority of their French rivals last season, both teams found a way onto the scoresheet in 27 of PSG’s 34 league matches. Their UCL record also impresses in that respect, particularly at the Parc des Princes, where their matches averaged 3.12 goals scored, and this line landed in five of nine.

Atalanta’s notoriously attacking approach tends to produce goals no matter the opponents; in fact, La Dea averaged 2.2 goals per game in the UCL last season, rising to 2.8 when only considering those away from home. They put two past both Spanish giants, and I can see them taking the game to PSG on Wednesday.

Nikola Krstovic to have 2+ Shots

Perhaps the best value on offer in this game is found backing  Krstović to fire off two or more shots at 1.4. For reference, this selection is priced as short as 1.13 with Paddy Power.

The forward, who signed for Atalanta over the summer, averaged over 4 shots per game last season despite being relatively starved of opportunities at Lecce, who finished just one place above the relegation zone.

He managed 2 assists against his old side last time round, and since his arrival has averaged north of 6 shots per game, having racked up 14 in little over two 90’s. If you’re after a bigger sample frame, it also pays dividends to look at his stats for Monenegro, for whom he’s averaged 5.8 shots per 90 across 5 full games this season.

Bradley Barcola to have 1+ Shots on Target

Barcola also looks to have been generously priced to test the Atalanta keeper, having bagged three goals across his last two matches for PSG.

The winger has averaged 1.2 shots on target per 90 in Ligue 1 this season, registering at least one in three of his four appearances. This line, however, would have landed in four because in the anomaly versus Angers, he was replaced by Goncalo Ramos, who brought this home through Sub On Play On.

Last season, Barcola averaged 1.6 shots on target per 90 in Ligue 1, and tested the keeper in nine of his 14 Champions League starts. Including Sub On Play On, this selection would’ve been a winner in 11 of those matches.

Isak Hien to be Shown a Card

With the tempo likely to be frantic and defenders constantly under pressure, Isak Hien looks a strong candidate for the referee’s book.

The Swedish centre-back has already racked up six fouls in his first three Serie A outings, collecting a yellow against Parma along the way. He followed that up with another caution on international duty versus Slovenia, having sinned three times.

This isn’t out of character. Last season, he finished as Atalanta’s most carded player with 10 bookings - the fourth-highest tally in Serie A, and that’s despite playing just 2,300 minutes. That works out at 0.4 yellows per 90, making him a reliable option in what has the making for an end-to-end clash.

Bradley Barcola to Score or Assist

Backers in this market are typically left satisfied, and having reached peak form, I think Barcola stands a strong chance of registering a goal contribution.

He’s scored or assisted in each of his last four appearances, and was particularly impressive last time out as he bagged a brace against Lens.

Over the course of PSG’s last campaign, the winger averaged just under a goal contribution per game (0.99), outperforming both his expected numbers in Ligue 1 (0.80 xG+xA/90) and in the Champions League (0.77). Those returns were good enough to rank fifth-best in France’s top flight.

Goncalo Ramos to have 2+ Shots On Target

Finally, Goncalo Ramos looks to have been priced generously to fire off two or more shots on target at the Parc des Princes.

The Portuguese forward boasted a remarkable rate of 2.71 per 90 in Ligue 1 last season, bringing this selection home in eight of his 11 appearances spanning over 45 minutes. Evidently, gametime was an issue, but following Dembele’s injury, it’s highly probable he’ll be starting on Wednesday.

Atalanta didn’t make it into the knockout stage of this competition last time around, so the pool of opponents comparable to PSG is pretty slim; however, it’s worth mentioning that Barcelona and Real Madrid combined for five goals and 13 shots on target in their matches against La Dea.

📈 PSG v Atalanta Form & Tactics

Unsurprisingly, PSG have made a perfect start to their Ligue 1 campaign, winning each of their four games and keeping clean sheets in three.

They’ve scored 10 goals across those four, which is three shy of Lille, who lead the league in that respect.

This is easily explained by the early injury-struggles PSG have encountered, which render them without Désiré Doué and Ousmanne Dembele for this clash. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was also a doubt after being forced off through injury in their 2-0 win against Lens, but early reports suggest he should be available.

On that day, it was Barcola’s brace that bailed them out, but the performance itself was far from convincing. PSG generated just 1.07 expected goals, notably less than the 1.16 Lens managed.

Atalanta, meanwhile, were able to get their first win of the season last time out against Lecce, as they try to adapt to life after Gasperini.

It certainly hasn’t been an easy start for La Dea, who, despite being able to seek solitude in their five points, will be concerned about the nature of those results, with each of their three opponents being placed in Serie A’s drop zone.

Even so, last weekend’s win felt significant; not just in terms of the result, but the marked improvement in performance and the timely lift it represented, ahead of their Champions League clash against the reigning champions.
