Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay and Cape Verde for the 2026 World Cup. The Green Falcons didn’t make it past the group stages in 2022, but they did pull off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, as they beat the eventual-winners Argentina in their opening game.

🌍 How did Saudi Arabia qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Saudi Arabia's route to the 2026 World Cup was far from smooth sailing. After getting through the first and second stages of the qualifiers, finishing top of their group, Saudi Arabia then struggled in the next round. They failed to beat Japan and Australia over two legs, which eventually saw them finish 3rd in Group C. Their record of three wins, four draws and three losses from their 10 fixtures was disappointing, but they atoned for their mistakes in the next round. Saudi Arabia finished top of a group with Iraq and Indonesia to book their spot at the World Cup.
👔 Who is the Saudi Arabia manager at the World Cup 2026?
Despite ultimately getting his side through the play-offs, Herve Renard was sacked just two months before the start of the World Cup, and Donis has been drafted in as his replacement. The Greek is vastly experienced, and he has spent several years managing clubs in the Saudi Pro League, so he will be familiar with the players. Donis is unlikely to set his side up in a pragmatic low block - he is known for playing attack-minded football, and that should be the case here at the World Cup.
🔎 Who are Saudi Arabia's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?
Salem Al-Dawsari
Salem Al-Dawsari is the talisman in this Saudi squad, and the 34-year-old is still expected to play a key role from the left wing. Al-Dawsari ranks 4th in the Saudi Arabia all-time top goalscorer charts, and he scored twice in the 2022 World Cup. He will bring a wealth of experience to the squad this summer, and he is also likely to have full responsibility over set pieces. Al-Dawsari has worked with Donis previously at Al Hilal, so there should be a good level of understanding between the two.
Firas Al Buraikan
Firas Al Buraikan is another player who will relish the chance to play under Donis again - he scored 17 goals in the Saudi Pro League in the 22/23 season under him. That was Al Buraikan’s joint-most prolific campaign in his career, and that earned him a move to Al-Ahli. The striker didn’t have the best season recently, but there is no doubt that Donis will be able to get the best out of him again this summer.
Saud Abdulhamid
Saud Abdulhamid is one of the few players for his national side competing outside of the Saudi Pro League, having established himself as a regular starter for Lens in Ligue 1. The 26-year-old finished with three goals and seven assists from 31 appearances across all competitions this term - Abdulhamid is strong on the ball, and he likes to push forward from right back and contribute to attacks. On paper, he suits the new manager’s system to a tee.
