Scotland have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco and Haiti. It is a challenging group for Steve Clarke’s side, especially considering this will be their first World Cup appearance in 28 years.

They will play their first two group games at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, before finishing up against Brazil in Florida.

🏆 What Happens if Scotland Win Group C?

It would be one of Scotland’s finest achievements in the nation's footballing history if they top their group this summer, and that would put them against the second-placed side in Group F. The most likely opponent would be Sweden or Japan, assuming the Netherlands top the group and Tunisia finish bottom.

This match would take place at the NRG Stadium in Texas - it’s fully air-conditioned and covered, but this venue has some of the harshest outdoor temperatures in excess of 34 degrees Celcius, which the Scots definitely won't be accustomed to.

After that, Scotland will face the winner of the Group E runner-up and second-place in Group I, which are again two incredibly competitive groups. Group E contains Germany, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador, while Group I has France, Senegal, and Norway. Even if Scotland finishes top, it won’t be an easy draw for them. They would face another long journey back up to New Jersey, with this match taking place at the MetLife Stadium.

It would be incredibly unlikely for Scotland to make it this far through the knockouts, assuming they top their group in the first place, but they could come up against England in the quarter-finals.

2️⃣ What Happens if Scotland Finish 2nd in Group C?

Finishing second in Group C would still be a big achievement for Scotland, and it is much more likely than overcoming Brazil. In this scenario, Scotland will face the winner of Group F at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, which is an incredibly long journey south. The conditions here are among the harshest at the tournament, as Monterrey's summer climate can be brutal. Average temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees Celsius with humidity around 63% - the stadium is fully open-air with no roof to provide relief.

Scotland players again won’t be used to playing in this kind of heat, and to make matters worse, their most likely opponent will be the Netherlands. Japan and Sweden are the other teams in Group F.

However, Scotland could have a favourable draw if they make it past the Dutch. They will face either the second-placed team from Group A or the runners-up in Group B. On paper, these groups look like the weaker ones, although they do contain both Canada and Mexico, which are host nations. This round of 16 fixture takes Scotland to the NRG Stadium, which is fully air-conditioned.

3️⃣ What Happens if Scotland Finish 3rd in Group C?

A third-place finish in Group C is perhaps the most likely spot for Scotland, which means they will be reliant on other teams underperforming. They would need to finish as one of the eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups, which means at least three points and a competitive goal difference. Scotland will have to make their game against Haiti count.

Should they qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams from Group C, Scotland would most likely have to play either the winner of Group E or the winner of Group I. This would be a tough matchup - as Germany are the top-ranked side in group E, while France look set to top group I. Still, there are a lot of different permutations for who Scotland could face in the knockouts if they do finish third. They will definitely come up against a group winner, though, so it promises to be a tough matchup for them.
