Sunday’s Goals Sheet
3+ Goals Villarreal v Real Madrid
🏆
Competition: La Liga
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 19th May at 18:00
This weekend presents the penultimate round of the La Liga season, with Real Madrid already confirmed as champions and Villarreal’s top-seven hopes are hanging by a thread. Sunday’s home team must win both remaining matches and hope Real Betis only pick up a point at most in their contests to possibly jump into the UEFA Conference League qualification place.
Marcelino’s side are at least in excellent form having recorded four victories in their last five league encounters, including a triumph over third-placed Girona. They’ve been improving all season and based upon the last ten rounds of fixtures in the division, Villarreal would be positioned second only to Real Madrid. Those particular clashes have averaged 3.40 goals and they’re currently on a 13-match run without drawing a blank in front of goal.
As for the UEFA Champions League finalists, goals have followed them recently as well. Six of their previous seven in all competitions featured over 2.5 goals, with an overall average of 3.57. Since being confirmed as title winners, matches have averaged 4.50 goals, therefore their trip to Estadio de la Cerámica could easily turn into an entertaining and end-to-end contest full of goals given little is essentially riding on this in reality.
3+ Goals in Metz v PSG
🏆
Competition: Ligue 1
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 19th May at 20:00
The final day of the Ligue 1 season has no real significance to Paris Saint-Germain, who have already been confirmed as champions and are very much focused on their upcoming Coupe de France final with rivals Lyon next Saturday. As for Metz, they sit in the relegation/promotion play-off spot and it’d take a minor miracle to finish higher than that. A defeat and Lorient beating Clermont, along with a seven-goal swing however, would relegate them, so they have to show up here.
PSG have chopped and changed their team since sealing first place and something similar should occur here. Last weekend they lost at home to mid table Toulouse but followed it up with a fine away win at fifth-placed Nice, making them somewhat hard to predict at present. The expectation is Kylian Mbappé, the Ligue 1 top goalscorer, should be recalled here, therefore an away win is entirely possible with them capable of surpassing the 2.5 goal line by themselves.
However, Luis Enrique’s men haven’t been as defensively secure as they’d have wanted to be. They’re on a ten-game run in all competitions without keeping a clean sheet, and they’ve faced bottom-two Lorient and Clermont in that period. Metz are also on an 11-game sequence of scoring in the league, of which seven also ended with over 2.5 goals.
3+ Goals in Reims v Rennes
🏆
Competition: Ligue 1
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 19th May at 20:00
This dead rubber affair between two Ligue 1 clubs holds great potential for an end-of-season shoot-out. The need to play too conservatively surely won’t enter the minds of either team here as they look to end the campaign with a bang.
Reims have earned an impressive four points from fixtures with Brest and Marseille since Will Still’s exit. However, the presence of Rennes increases hopes of this meeting containing goals. Since they have slipped into mid table they’ve played with greater freedom; contributing to a greater number of goals. Their previous five has averaged 4.40 goals, with the five in all competitions before that averaging only 2.00.
Sunday’s home team have lost the xG battle in six of their last seven games and that warranted conceding more than the 11 they actually did. They’ll try to score their way out of trouble as they aim to impress prior to a new manager entering this summer. Given the two clubs are averaging over a goal both scored and conceded in league action over the season, expecting a third in a meaningless clash under no pressure should not be too much to ask.
