📂 Tottenham v Sunderland Cheat Sheet
📈 Tottenham v Sunderland Form & Stats
Thomas Frank will be feeling the pressure now with Tottenham winning just three of their last 10 matches in the Premier League, a run which has left them in the bottom half of the table ahead of kick-off. Tottenham’s home form has been particularly poor, with just two wins from their nine home games. They aren’t scoring enough in these matches either, with just the 11 in front of their home fans.
Frank has a bit of an issue as it’s not only the results that are proving problematic for Tottenham fans, but also how they approach games. Marginal gains and defensive solidity are traits of an approach that is so foreign to what Tottenham were playing with previously, and Tottenham have a fan base that demands to be entertained, which is why Ange Postecoglu was allowed to survive so long.
With Tottenham failing to entertain and failing to pick up points, there is a sour atmosphere in the ground, which could come out here if Sunderland frustrate the Lilywhites. One of Tottenham’s main issues is that they aren’t creating high-quality chances; their xG for the season sits at just 18.0 - only Burnley, Wolves, and Sunderland have a lower xG than Tottenham in the Premier League this term.
Sunderland are enjoying a season better than many would have expected or even hoped for, with Regis Le Bris leading the side to their current position of seventh in the Premier League. It’s the best display we’ve seen from a newly promoted side for the last few years, so Le Bris and the Sunderland players deserve real credit for what they have achieved to this point.
The concern for Sunderland at the moment is that they are outperforming nearly all of their underlying numbers. This is particularly true of their defensive record, with the Black Cats only conceding 18 goals from an xG tally of 27. This suggests that Sunderland are getting a bit lucky at times, which is something you need as a newly promoted side, but also that their keeper, Robin Roefs, is a top goalkeeper.
📔 Tottenham v Sunderland Formation & Team News
Tottenham have been experimenting with different shapes over the last few weeks, but are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 here. We can also expect Tottenham to have most of the ball, with Sunderland having one of the lowest possession shares in the Premier League (41.8% - 18th).
This doesn’t quite give Tottenham an advantage as they’ve struggled to carve out chances from open play in the absence of creative players like James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, who remain sidelined. Tottenham are also vulnerable in transition. Brentford didn’t quite manage to catch them out during the week, but the warning signs were there from Frank’s side.
Sunderland will spend the majority of the game in a 4-4-2 low to mid block with a focus on making the most of counter attacks and set pieces. Regis Le Bris deserves serious credit for the job he’s done with this Sunderland side, giving them one of the best defensive structures in the division.
Sunderland are missing a few key players due to AFCON, with the likes of Noah Sadiki, Reinildo, and Bertrand Traore all currently away with their national sides. Sunderland have managed these absences so far, but being without Sadiki in particular is a big blow and takes some of the energy out of the midfield.
