Chelsea travel to face Atalanta in the Champions League, with both sides having the same record across the five league phase matches so far - 3W, 1D, 1L.
A win for either side would be a massive boost for their chances of finishing in the top eight of the league phase and avoiding two extra matches to the calendar around February.

📂 Atalanta v Chelsea Cheat Sheet
📈 Atalanta v Chelsea Form & Tactics
I was very critical of Atalanta in the early weeks and months of the campaign due to their manager, Ivan Juric, who never really should have been given the role after a disastrous spell at Southampton.
Despite Atalanta’s disappointing results domestically under his reign, the Italian side have managed to find some consistency in the Champions League with victories against Frankfurt, Marseille, and Club Brugge so far.
Ivan Juric has now been dismissed from his role as head coach, with former Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino stepping into the role. He’s won three of his five matches in charge of Atalanta so far, and looks to be switching away from Juric’s pragmatic style, which was a real shift from the foundations set by Gian Piero Gasperini.
Palladino should get Atalanta back playing in Gasperini’s image, though they did lose 3-1 to relegation candidates Hellas Verona in Serie A last time out, bringing an end to the new manager bounce. It’s worth noting that Atalanta have only lost one game at home across all competitions this term, so this could be a real challenge for the Blues.
Chelsea have had a disastrous week, which has tempered expectations around Stamford Bridge about what is possible this season. Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat against Leeds at Elland Road was probably their worst performance of the season so far - they were bullied by Leeds in that game and couldn’t replicate the energy levels they showed in matches against Barcelona and Arsenal.
This is a real issue for Maresca; he can’t rely on his side to generate their own motivation in games that they are expected to win. These big nights in the Champions League, or facing off against a big six rival in the Premier League, are not too concerning for Chelsea - it is the matches in between these high-stakes affairs that Chelsea will need to start winning if they want to be considered as serious contenders for big trophies.
📔 Atalanta v Chelsea Formation & Team News
Atalanta still line up in a 3-4-3, which has been the preferred shape and system of the club in recent history, despite the recent changes in the dugout. Atalanta have also long been a club that pride themselves on the style of their football, with their fans often expecting an exciting display - particularly when they play at home.
The front three of Atalanta - Scamacca, Lookman, and De Ketelaere. - can cause Chelsea problems, particularly the pace that Lookman offers in transition. Atalanta will have seen the struggles that Chelsea have had in their last two away matches against Bournemouth and Leeds, looking to replicate that physicality, which is where someone like Scamacca could be very useful.
Chelsea tweak their approach throughout the season, but Maresca likes his side to build with a 3-2-4-1 shape - with Robert Sanchez often coming off his line to add an extra player in the build-up phase. This could be particularly important against Atalanta’s front three, who will go man for man against Chelsea’s three defenders when the Blues are in possession.
Cole Palmer is back fit and started Chelsea’s 0-0 draw against Bournemouth last time out, but it would be a surprise if he gets another start here, as Maresca has said a few times that he wants to manage his minutes to ensure that Palmer isn’t sidelined for a longer period.
📊 Atalanta v Chelsea Key Stats
Atalanta have lost just one game at home across all competitions this season.
Estevao has scored in each of his last three Champions League matches.
Atalanta have won three of their five matches under new head coach, Raffaele Palladino.
Chelsea are without a win across their last three matches - 2D, 1L.
