After losing back-to-back games before the international break, Barcelona snatched victory from Girona at the weekend with a 93rd-minute goal. The Catalans have looked a bit off-colour in recent games as they deal with numerous injuries, and Olympiacos will be hoping to capitalise on that.

The Greek side travel to the Olympic Lluis Companys Stadium on Tuesday night hoping to secure their first Champions League win this term.

Over 2.5 Goals

Barcelona saw a total of 141 goals from their 38 La Liga games last season, averaging 3.71 goals per game which was comfortably the highest in the league. Not much has changed this term, as the Catalans are averaging 3.78 goals per game, with over 2.5 goals landing in ten of their eleven matches in total.

However, since the injury to Joan Garcia, Barcelona have struggled defensively. Wojciech Szczesny is still yet to keep a clean sheet from any of his four starts - in fact, Barcelona have conceded eight goals in those matches. Despite their win at the weekend, Girona were able to fashion some clear-cut chances, accumulating a total of ten shots which amounted to 1.84 xG. In the end, they were unfortunate to leave Barcelona with nothing to show for it.

Olympiacos are more than capable of contributing to the scoreline here, taking advantage of Barcelona’s defensive vulnerabilities.

Olympiacos to have 3+ Shots on Target

The Greek side carved out ten shots and three big chances against Arsenal at the Emirates, in what was an incredibly positive performance despite the result. David Raya was forced into three saves, the best of which denied Daniel Podence from close-range, as Olympaicos looked dangerous in the final third.

Barcelona’s lacklustre defensive showing against Girona was not an isolated incident - the Catalans conceded 13 shots and five big chances against Sevilla just before the international break, which amounted to 2.8 xG. That was despite the hosts seeing only 39% possession.

Prior to that, PSG handed Hansi Flick his first European loss of the season. Szczesny was forced into five saves in that game, preventing the scoreline from getting out of hand. Across those three recent games, Barcelona have conceded a total of 40 shots, with 16 of those hitting the target. That stat alone should fill Olympiacos with confidence.

Fermin Lopez to have 3+ Shots

Hansi Flick does deserve a bit of sympathy for the length of the injury list he currently has. Both Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski picked up knocks while on international duty, meaning 17-year-old Toni Fernandez led the line at the weekend for the Catalans.

As some consolation for Flick, Fermin Lopez was fit enough to make an appearance off the bench for the second-half, and the 22-year-old looked sharp. He racked up a total of five shots, hitting the target three times, while also striking the post with one of his efforts.

The Spaniard has missed several games through injury this season, so has only started three matches, but he has looked promising when he has played. Against Valencia, Fermin scored twice from five shots, helping his side win that game 6-0. He then started against Newcastle in the Champions League, during which he had three shots.

Daniel Podence to Commit 2+ Fouls

In his last five starts for Olympiacos in all competitions, Podence has committed a total of nine fouls, registering multiple infringements in four of those matches. That includes two fouls against Pafos in round one of the Champions League, and two fouls against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Podence is useful for tracking back and getting involved in defensive duels, often helping his fullback. He’ll have plenty to contend with on Tuesday night, lining up against Lamine Yamal and Jules Kounde on the flank.

Yamal was Barcelona’s most-fouled player last season, and he is averaging 2.24 fouls drawn per 90 this term. Jules Kounde is not too far behind, averaging 1.79 fouls won per 90, drawing a free-kick in seven of his eight starts this campaign, making it an excellent matchup to target Podence here to commit at least two fouls.

📈 Barcelona v Olympiacos Form & Tactics

Having to contend with injuries to key players, Barcelona suffered back-to-back defeats prior to the October international break. They were beaten 2-1 on home turf by PSG, despite taking an early lead through Ferran Torres.

The Catalans were then picked apart by Sevilla in a shock 4-1 defeat. After going two goals down after 37 minutes, Marcus Rashford pulled one back, and Robert Lewandowski had the perfect chance to equalise from the penalty spot shortly after half-time. However, the veteran striker missed, and the hosts took full advantage. They scored twice late on to secure the three points at the Ramon-Pizjuan Stadium, condemning Barcelona to their first league defeat of the season and knocking them off top spot.

After a couple weeks to reset, Hansi Flick did taste victory against Girona last time out, but Barcelona were not quite at their best again. Despite racking up 27 shots, they amounted to just 1.77 xG, and it took a 93rd minute goal from Ronald Araujo to secure the victory in Barcelona. Girona, who sit second-bottom of the league, managed to generate a higher xG tally than the hosts, despite only registering 11 shots.

After winning the Greek Super League by a comfortable margin last season, Olympiacos look well-placed to repeat that feat, as they sit top of the standings after seven matches, having won five of their games. They have scored a total of 16 goals in that time, with only one other side scoring more in the Greek top flight.

📔 Barcelona v Olympiacos Formation & Team News

Both Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski picked up injuries while on international duty, meaning 17-year-old Toni Fernandez led the line at the weekend against the Catalans. He was replaced at half-time by Fermin Lopez, who made his first appearance since returning from injury, and Fermin will be in contention to start midweek.

With Raphina and Dani Olmo also out, Frenkie de Jong was deployed in a more advanced midfield role against Girona, during which he assisted the winning goal in the 93rd minute. Hansi Flick seems certain to start Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford on the flanks.

Barcelona are also suffering at the back, with both Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Joan Garcia ruled out, meaning Wojciech Szczesny is certain to keep his starting spot in between the sticks.

Olympiacos have a much smaller injury list - Rodinei will be ruled out as he continues to recover from a muscle injury. Costinha is expected to fill in at right back, where he has been a standout performer in recent weeks.

Gabriel Strefezza is also ruled out, leaving a void to fill on the right wing. Gelson Martins has typically started out wide, and should be in line to reclaim his starting position after being rested at the weekend.
