Germany have been drawn in Group E for the 2026 World Cup, meaning they will face Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curacao. It looks like a competitive group on paper, but the Germans are the favourites to progress. They have strong pedigree in this competition, having won the World Cup four times - only Brazil have lifted the trophy on more occasions.

🌍 How did Germany qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

After losing their opening match of the World Cup qualifiers 2-0 against Slovakia, Germany recovered strongly, and won their next five successive matches to secure top spot in Group A.

It was a relatively easy group for them, but they seemed to grow in confidence, and finished the campaign with a 6-0 drubbing of Slovakia, to get revenge on home turf. The Germans were dominant in that game - they racked up 22 shots and seven big chances, which translated to 3.28 xG. They registered 72% possession, highlighting how effective they were at retaining possession and keeping pressure on their opponents.

After conceding twice against Slovakia, Germany then conceded against Northern Ireland in the next game, but they kept four straight clean sheets after that.

👔 Who is the Germany manager at the World Cup 2026?

Nagelsmann led Germany to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals before being eliminated by, the eventual winners, Spain. However, it was a close match, and the Germans were unfortunate to be eliminated in the dying embers of extra time. He then guided his side to a 4th-place finish at the Nations League, losing to Portugal and France. Nagelsmann wants his side to adopt an attack-minded approach, regardless of the opponent, which often makes for exciting and open contests.

🔎 Who are Germany's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has proven he is one to rely on in the big games - he scored against Spain in the Euros, and bagged against Portugal in the Nations League. Even though Germany lost both of those games, Wirtz played his part. He also contributed to all four goals scored against Switzerland in the March friendly. The Liverpool man has featured regularly at club level this season, and seems to really bring out his best form on the international stage.

Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich will have a slightly different role for Germany, than he does for Bayern Munich at club level, as Nagelsmann prefers him at right back instead of in central midfield. However, he is still afforded plenty of attacking freedom to get forward and contribute to attacks, as well as being the primary set piece taker. Kimmich posted two goals and one assist from five World Cup qualifying matches.

You can get 14/1 on Germany to win the World Cup. Given their history as a footballing nation, that is eye-watering. And if the last major tournament is anything to go by, they'll be there or thereabouts, considering they pushed Spain as close as anyone else in Euro 2024.

Musiala's impact feels big, he could win the Golden Ball, or he could struggle to make an impact. They have a good manager in Nagelsmann to take them deep.

Absolutely. They're rightfully not at the top of the outright winner market, but with a kind draw or some early surprise exits, they could easily shoot up that list.

Some convincing wins over Curacao and Ivory Coast in the first two games would see them taken very seriously by the rest of the field.

Germany are in Group E. They play Curacao first, then Ivory Coast and finish off against Ecuador. Potentially leaving the toughest game for last when they should've wrapped up qualification.

Nagelsmann has options, we can see him opting for a 4-2-3-1 and this starting XI:

Baumann

Kimmich-Tah-Schlotterbeck-Raum

Pavlovic-Goretzka

Sane-Musiala-Wirtz

Haverts

Sunday 14th June 6pm: Germany v Curacao

Saturday 20th June 9pm: Germany v Ivory Coast

Thursday 25th June 9pm: Ecuador v Germany

Florian Wirtz could step into a central attacking midfield role instead of Musiala.

Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Lennart Karl are also players who could come in handy, should Nagelsmann need to shuffle his pack.

Havertz and Wirtz will be up there to take both. While Joshua Kimmich will take a lot of set pieces, corners as well as free kicks.
