Getafe to Receive the Most Cards

Backing Getafe to be on the receiving end of more cards than Barcelona at Estadi Johan Cruyff looks an interesting and well-priced proposition.

Barcelona have picked up just three cards across their opening four matches - half that of the next cleanest side in La Liga. The same can’t be said for their opponents in those games, who combine for a league-topping 12 yellows and two reds. Last season, Barcelona averaged 1.76 cards per 90, compared to the 2.45 their opponents received, but at home, their advantage was even more pronounced, with Barca averaging a mere 1.26 per game.

As for Getafe, they drew cards at a faster rate than their opposition last season, averaging 3.11 v their opponents’ 2.87. That margin widened significantly away from home, with their average rising to 3.37, compared to the 2.53 of their hosts.

Getafe (+3) Handicap

Barcelona’s favouritism needs no justifying, but I think the bookies are underestimating Getafe’s chances of staying within reach. Last season, only Valencia beat them by a margin of 3+ goals, and even then, two of the three goals they conceded were penalties.

Over their last eight clashes with Barcelona, they’ve been separated by a single goal or less in all but one, securing four draws and three clean sheets in the process. With three wins in their first four, and just 2.8 xGA conceded (2nd best in the league), I think there’s definitely value here.

Excluding their clash with Mallorca, in which their opponents were reduced to nine men before half time, this selection has landed in three of Barca’s four matches this season, including against newly-promoted Levante. Their busy schedule features midweek games on either side of this one, and with Lamine Yamal already ruled out, Barca are also unlikely to be at full strength.

🔵 Barca Ruthless in Front of Goal

Barcelona have made a confident start to the season, recording three wins and a draw in the league, alongside their midweek victory at St James’ Park.

In all likelihood, their draw with Rayo Vallecano represented a temporary blip, although that’s not to say that they played any better than the 1-1 scoreline would suggest; in fact, they were bettered for expected goals and shots by their opponents, and that’s despite Barcelona’s goal coming from a penalty.

Nonetheless, Hansi Flick’s men were able to bounce back in some style, thrashing Valencia 6-0 in their last La Liga outing. They created over 4 xG from 24 shots, 10 of which were on target.

This will be a very different kind of test, and it will be interesting to see how Barca cope against, arguably, Spain’s most defensive top-flight outfit.

🔴 Pragmatism and Structure Propel Getafe to Fast Start

Getafe have been the epitome of efficiency so far this season, having won three out of four matches, all while averaging no more than 37% of the ball - the 2nd least of any side in La Liga.

That’s pretty typical of José Bordalás, a coach with a long track record of winding up Barcelona managers. Former boss Quique Setién once fumed, “This isn’t football. It’s something else, and it makes my blood boil,” while Xavi couldn’t hide his frustration, remarking, “Normal people don’t want to watch football like that.”

To paint a fuller picture, last season Getafe completed the fewest passes of any team, but the second-most fouls. After four games played this time round, they rank 2nd last and 3rd with respect to these metrics.

Their matches this season have produced just 6.4 expected goals, also the least in the league, and only Athletic Club have shipped fewer xGA than Getafe (2.8).

📊 How Do Barcelona v Getafe Compare?

As mentioned above, Getafe have excelled in frustrating a variety of Barcelona managers over the years, and this has translated into some pretty respectable results given the calibre of their opponents.

Barcelona have managed two wins across the last five showings, with Getafe managing to nail down draws in the remaining three. Two of those ended goalless, a scoreline which has prevailed in three of the last seven showings. Across that same stretch, this fixture has produced only eight goals in total - an average of just 1.14 per game.
