Iran have established themselves as World Cup regulars over the past two decades, qualifying for four of the last five tournaments and featuring in each of the last three. Yet despite that consistency, they've never made it past the group stage - a record they will be desperate to put right when they arrive in North America.

🌍 How did Iran qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

By finishing 1st in Group A of the AFC third qualifying round, Iran booked their place at the 2026 World Cup, marking a fourth consecutive finals appearance and the seventh in their history. The foundation of their success in qualifying was a well drilled defensive unit, supported by genuine quality in the final third.

Across the two stages, Iran recorded an impressive 11 wins from 16 matches, losing just once. Amir Ghalenoei’s side topped the scoring charts in both of their respective sections and, across the full campaign, conceded only 12 goals. That defensive solidity is reflected in six of their 11 victories coming alongside a clean sheet, while two of their four draws ended goalless.

👔 Who is the Iran manager at the 2026 World Cup?

Iran will be led into the 2026 World Cup by Amir Ghalenoei. The 62-year-old is in his second spell in charge of the national team, having been reappointed in March 2023. Ghalenoei’s first stint lasted just over a year and ultimately proved underwhelming, coming to an end after the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, where Iran lost on penalties to South Korea in the quarter-finals.

Much of Ghalenoei’s success has come in Iran’s domestic scene, particularly during spells with Esteghlal and Sepahan, where he won league titles and cemented his status as one of the most decorated coaches in the country.

🔎 Who are Iran's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Mehdi Taremi

Mehdi Taremi remains Iran’s most important player by some distance. The Olympiacos striker was in fine form throughout qualifying, firing in 10 goals across his 15 outings, and will hope to make his mark on the global stage for a third time.

Taremi's overall record for his country currently stands at a mighty impressive 59 goals in 103 appearances, underlining just how vital he will be to Iran’s hopes of emerging from the group stage for the first time ever.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh

Alireza Jahanbakhsh is a player who may be familiar to Premier League fans, having spent three years at Brighton. The 32-year-old has also had spells in the Netherlands and is currently plying his trade with Belgian Pro League side Dender.

His versatility and experience make him a key figure in the Iranian squad. Jahanbakhsh has featured in eight of Iran’s last nine World Cup matches, missing only one through suspension after picking up two yellow cards across Iran’s first two group games in Qatar.

Saman Ghoddos

Saman Ghoddos is another name that Premier League fans may recognise, having spent time with Brentford in the not-too-distant past. The Iran international, now 32, has enjoyed a varied career across Europe, with spells in Sweden, France and England, before more recently moving to the UAE Pro League with Kalba.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Ghoddos gives Iran added flexibility, as he is capable of featuring up front, in wide areas or even in the full back positions when called upon.

Best Free Bets, Offers & Betting Sites for World Cup 2026

The World Cup is the best time to create a new bookmaker account because the Bookmaker Offers are much better. Andy and the Andy's Bet Club experts have tried and tested the Free Bets, and here are their favourites:

Iran come in at 500/1 on the outright winner market. There are lots of off-pitch distractions that'll complicate their efforts to progress in the tournament.

They are better than most of the minnow nations and they could definitely get out of the group. But they've no chance of winning it all.

Iran are in Group G, they'll play New Zealand, Egypt and Belgium.

Taremi

Iran v New Zealand: Tuesday 16th June at 2am BST.

Belgium v Iran: Sunday 21st June at 8pm BST.

Egypt v Iran: Saturday 27th June at 4am BST.

It would be a huge loss. Alireza Jahanbakhsh could be his replacement, and he'd bring decent experience, but he doesn't have the pedigree or attacking nous of Taremi. Ali Alipour and Deenis Dargahi could see more minutes if Taremi was unavailable.

Taremi will be on pens. Saman Ghoddos, Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh or Omid Noorafkan are the most likely to take the attackign free kicks.
