📂 Marseille v Newcastle Cheat Sheet
📈 Marseille v Newcastle Form & Tactics
There has been a real dichotomy in form for Newcastle at home, compared to away. The Magpies have won each of their last six straight matches across all competitions at St James’ Park, but have lost three on their bounce on their travels. That was a similar trend for Eddie Howe’s side last season - they picked up 38 points in the Premier League on home turf, but managed just 28 points from their away matches.
However, they have done well to manage the fixture congestion this season, and Newcastle have been competitive in Europe. Their only loss came against Barcelona in round one, but since then, they have secured three victories all to nil, scoring nine goals in that time. However, it is worth noting they have had an easier run of fixtures.
Marseille are battling at the opposite end of the table, with the complete opposite record to Newcastle. They have lost three Champions League matches, putting them outside of the playoff spots, so improvements are needed. However, Marseille are doing well in the league, sitting just two points behind title-holders PSG. Les Phoceens are unbeaten after six Ligue 1 games at home this season, including a notable 1-0 victory over the Parisians.
📔Marseille v Newcastle Formation & Team News
Eddie Howe has not rotated much this season, but will have Dan Burn available at his disposal once more after he was suspended for the weekend. Anthony Gordon seems to be nearing a recovery, and could be in contention for some minutes, but it is unlikely that Harvey Barnes drops out of the starting eleven. Sven Botman was benched at the weekend for Fabian Schar, meaning there is a bit of uncertainty around who is to start at the back here.
Roberto De Zerbi is limited with his options at the moment, so seems set to go with a similar eleven to that which beat Nice on Friday night. Matt O’Riley will be in contention to replace Kondogbia in midfield, while Leonardo Balerdi should be fit enough to line up at the back again. De Zerbi has been quite variable with his formations this season, but is likely to stick with a 4-2-3-1 on Tuesday night, with Aubameyang leading the line.
