📂 Chelsea v Barcelona Cheat Sheet
📈 Chelsea v Barcelona Form & Tactics
These sides have a near identical record in the Champions League this season with both winning two of their four matches so far, and Barcelona only sit ahead of Chelsea in the league phase table on goal difference. This sets up what should be an evenly matched contest between two sides that will be desperate to finish in the top eight to avoid fixture congestion in February next year.
Chelsea come into this game unbeaten across their last five matches in all competitions. It’s an important week for the Blues, with Arsenal also coming to Stamford Bridge at the weekend. Enzo Maresca clearly planned ahead for this busy week with the Blues rotating heavily against Burnley, but still managing to walk away with all three points, which was a tactical risk that has paid off for Maresca.
I’d expect Chelsea to approach this game similarly to the way they did in the Club World Cup final. The space in behind the Barcelona backline is begging to be exploited, just like PSG’s was in the Club World Cup final. Maresca utilised Malo Gusto on that occasion really effectively, with Robert Sanchez constantly looking for his overlapping runs, which destabilised the PSG backline.
Barcelona ran out 4-0 winners over Athletic Club in their first game back after the international break, but will be eyeing up some better performances in Europe, having dropped points in two of their matches so far - against PSG and Club Brugge. Both results would have been alarming for Flick, who also saw his side lose out in the El Clásico a few weeks ago. This is becoming an unsavoury pattern for Barcelona in big matches, and is something they’ll need to correct quickly if they want to finish in the top eight.
That being said, the attacking prowess of this Barcelona side cannot be overlooked or underestimated. Rashford, Yamal and Robert Lewandowski, in particular, can be lethal finishers when given the opportunity, and in Barcelona’s case it tends to be the consistency of their attacks that unsettles backlines, with a constant barrage of pressure.
📔 Chelsea v Barcelona Formation & Team News
Enzo Maresca is a detail-oriented manager and rarely leaves a stone unturned in setting his side up for matches. As a result, Chelsea can look a little overcoached at times with Maresca demanding specific rotations to open up space and break down the opposition. Chelsea’s main issue has been against low blocks, when sides go at them, they tend to get a bit more joy.
Another commendable aspect when it comes to Maresca is his willingness to change things if the game doesn’t play out how he expected it to. He clearly expected Burnley to play with a back five against Chelsea at the weekend, and made an intelligent tactical shift midway through the first half when he realised they had set up with a back four by adjusting the role of Cucurella, allowing the Blues to have more of the ball in Burnley’s half.
Chelsea can be expected to line up in a 3-2-4-1 here when in possession, with one of the full backs having a more adventurous role. I would guess this to be Gusto rather than Cucurella, as the Spaniard will have to contend with Lamine Yamal down his side. Chelsea are set to be without Cole Palmer here, with Romeo Lavia and Levi Colwill also expected to miss this big contest.
Barcelona will line up in a 4-2-3-1, with the most notable aspect of their game being their extraordinarily high line. I still don’t think that they will get success in the Champions League with this approach, at some point in the tournament it will catch them out - as we saw in the semi-finals against Inter Milan last season.
Notably, Barcelona are expected to be without Pedri for this encounter, which is a massive blow for Hansi Flick’s side. He keeps everything ticking in the middle of the park and dominated Newcastle in Barcelona’s most recent trip to England. His absence will naturally allow Chelsea to control the game a bit more in the middle of the park.
