After a 16-year absence from the World Cup, New Zealand have qualified for the tournament this summer, and they have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and Iran. It’s a challenging group for the All Whites, and they will hope to represent Oceania well as the only team that qualified from that region.

🌍 How did New Zealand qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

New Zealand were totally dominant in their qualifying campaign, having convincingly won all five of their matches. The All Whites topped their group alongside Tahiti, Vanuatu and Samoa, with 19 goals scored and just one conceded. That put them into the knockout games - New Zealand beat Fiji 7-0 in the semi-final, before getting past New Caledonia in the final with another convincing 3-0 win. With Australia playing through the AFC qualification route, New Zealand didn’t have to face any competitive opponents, so it was easy for them.

👔 Who is the New Zealand manager at the 2026 World Cup?

Darren Bazeley has been New Zealand's head coach since 2023, and he has plenty of experience within the national team setup. He initially took charge of the under 17s in 2011, before working his way up to the U20 and U23 squads. His understanding of the players couldn’t be much better, and Bazeley seems like the perfect person to lead New Zealand at the World Cup this summer. He likes his side to be defensively sound first and foremost.

🔎 Who are New Zealand's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Chris Wood

It’s impossible to talk about New Zealand without mentioning Chris Wood - he is the captain and talisman of the All Whites, and the focal point of everything they do in the final third. Wood hasn’t had the smoothest season, as he had to deal with a significant injury setback, but he returned to first team action towards the end of the campaign, so should have plenty of time to get back to full fitness before the World Cup rolls around.

Matt Garbett

Wood was unsurprisingly the top scorer for New Zealand in their five qualifying matches, with nine goals scored. Matt Garbett was the top assister, and he chipped in with six goal involvements as well. The 24-year-old plays for Peterborough United in League One, and he looks set for a big role in the summer, with a chance to really make a name for himself. He started all five games for New Zealand in the qualifiers - only two other players managed that feat.

Liberato Cacace

Liberato Cacace contributed a further two assists, and he is also expected to play a big role for New Zealand this summer. Cacace plays as a left wing back for Wrexham - he likes to get forward and contribute to attacks, and he is given a bit more attacking license for his national team. Cacace brings Championship-level quality to a squad that is otherwise largely based in lower English divisions and the Australasian leagues, so he is another key player.

Best Free Bets, Offers & Betting Sites for World Cup 2026

The World Cup is the best time to create a new bookmaker account because the Bookmaker Offers are much better. Andy and the Andy's Bet Club experts have tried and tested the Free Bets, and here are their favourites:

New Zealand are 500/1 to win the tournament with Paddy Power. With strong doubts over their progression from the group stage, it's hard to imagine them getting through five knockout rounds as well beyond that.

Only eight teams have ever won the World Cup, and they are all well established footballing nations. It'd be an all-time sporting shock if New Zealand went all the way.

New Zealand are in Group G with Belgium, Egypt and Iran.

Wood

Iran v New Zealand: Tuesday 16th June at 2am BST.

New Zealand v Egypt: Monday 22nd June at 2am BST.

New Zealand v Belgium: Saturday 27th June at 4am BST.

Wood is their record goalscorer and they don't have a replacement of the same quality. Elijah Just could play through the middle, Port Vale's Ben Waine could come in - but NZ would be much worse off without Wood leading the line.

Wood will take pens, potentially Ben Waine if Wood is off the field.

Tim Payne, Jesse Randall and Elijah Just will be in the mix to shoot from free kicks.
