🔴 Europa League Looks a Burden for Out-Of-Sorts Nice

Nice have made a slow start to the season, with three defeats from their opening five league matches. These three defeats were all quite bruising; the first of them came at home against Toulouse, before Nice fell to 3-1 and 4-1 defeats on the road against Le Havre and Brest. 

Nice are in a bit of a mess at the moment, mainly due to the issues that have arisen since Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought a stake in Man United, leaving Nice in limbo after a few years of poor management by INEOS.

This has had a real effect on their performances, especially in Europe - Nice failed to win a single game in the league phase of the Europa League last season, losing five of their eight matches in the competition and conceding 16 goals in the process.

They’ll be hoping for an improved performance in the league phase this season, but their poor start indicates that the French side may find the Europa League to be a hindrance, rather than a path to salvation.

⚪ Soule and Solid Defence Fuel Roma’s Europa League Ambitions

Roma have started the season brightly under the tutelage of former Atalanta head coach Gasperini. He’s one of the most underrated coaches in Europe in my view and has already won this competition with Atalanta, which was an achievement that arrived via an Ademola Lookman hat-trick against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.

Roma have won three of their four matches in Serie A this season and have notably only conceded one goal across these games. Their standout victory so far came last time out against Lazio in the Rome Derby, as they claimed a 1-0 win.

Roma do have some really talented players that can take them deep in this competition. Of this attacking talent, Matias Soule is a player worth keeping an eye on. Soule registered 10 goal contributions across his 27 appearances in Serie A last season and has already provided a goal and an assist this season.

Gasperini has a reputation for bringing the best out of his attacking players, and Soule could be the latest to benefit from his instruction.
