🏆 Serie A Winners – Inter
Unfortunately for punters looking for a Serie A Underdog, all evidence in the market seems to suggest that the favourites, Inter, will reign supreme.
Last time out, the Nerrazzuri enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent history, accumulating a remarkable 94 points, securing the league title with five games to spare against rivals AC Milan. Simone Inzaghi’s men struck an impressive balance between attack and defence, scoring 13 more goals than any other side in the league while conceding the fewest by some distance too.
As has tended to be the case in recent years, Lautaro Martinez was key to Inter’s success, with the Argentine racking up 24 goals to scoop up the Golden Boot award. That said, the addition of Marcus Thuram on a free transfer from Monchengladbach proved to be incredible business, with the Frenchman providing 20 league goal contributions.
In previous years, Inter Milan have struggled to maintain their key players following league-winning campaigns due to foreign interest, last time out losing both Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi. This season, however, they have bolstered their squad while also holding on to their most pivotal players. The additions of Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi add to their already impressive depth which will be significant given their Coppa Italia and Champions League aspirations.
After completing their last campaign with little competition, it is difficult to see who Inter’s closest challengers will be this season. AC Milan, Roma, Lazio, Juventus, and Napoli all have new managers, making predicting the outcome more uncertain but in the process, boosting Inter’s chances.
🏆 Inter to Win Outright
🔵 Serie A Winners Without Inter – Napoli
Whether or not the above is of ample substance to convince you of Inter’s likely dominance next season, plenty seem to agree, prompting bookmakers to offer a ‘without Inter market’.
As mentioned, Atalanta excluded, each of the other sides who can realistically expect a battle for Champions League football, have all changed managers. In looking at the new names, there’s one that stands out, Antonio Conte.
Somewhat of a cult hero in Italy, Conte’s reputation precedes him and to many is reason enough to back Napoli for success. After joining Juventus in 2011, Conte guided them to three consecutive titles before departing. Following this, he won the Premier League in his first season in England with Chelsea, later finishing second and then first in his two seasons with Inter.
The Italian will come armed with his iconic 3-5-2 formation and by the looks of things Romelu Lukaku, who starred under Conte at Inter. Osimhen’s future remains unclear; however, Conte is set to inherit either a world-class striker to partner Lukaku or a huge transfer fee in return for him. Either way, one thing we know about Conte is that he doesn’t work with clubs unless their interests are closely aligned, having left both Juventus and Inter after league-winning campaigns due to conflicts with the board.
To be frank, last season can only be described as a complete write-off for Napoli, who launched what is surely one of the worst title-defences of all time, finishing in tenth place. Despite this, last season’s underlying stats were not terrible. Napoli accumulated the third greatest expected goals tally in Serie A (68.49), thus contributing to their accumulation of the fourth most expected points.
It is worth noting that they have retained most of their key players whilst adding to their ranks this summer, with the likes of Alessandro Buongiorno, Rafa Marin and Leonardo Spinazzola forming their new-look defence.
Ultimately, it looks like a real toss-up between a few sides looking to provide Inter with some competition but to back Napoli is to back Conte and that is something I am very comfortable doing.
🔵 Napoli To Win Without Inter
4️⃣ Serie A Top 4 Finish – Atalanta
Back to winning ways, Atalanta finished fourth in the previous Serie A campaign, meaning they have achieved this feat four times in the past six seasons. La Dea topped off the season with an outstanding 3-0 victory over Leverkusen in the Europa League final, winning their first ever major European trophy.
Moreover, Atalanta have had what looks to be an outstanding summer thus far, making many exciting signings including those of Ben Godfrey, Charles De Ketelaere and Nicolo Zaniolo. So far, they have held on to their most integral players; however, the future of the highly sought-after Koopmeiners remains uncertain.
One possible stumbling block would be Scamacca’s injury in preseason, with the forward out for up to six months with an ACL tear. However, Atalanta are actively seeking a replacement, with Anthony Martial heavily linked amongst others.
As mentioned, the managerial circus has been in town, leaving Gian Piero Gasperini and Simone Inzaghi as the only top four contenders to be entering a second consecutive season with their respective sides. This could work in Gasperini’s favour, with the experienced manager having been at Atalanta since 2016.
The high press and aggressive midfield play he utilises makes Atalanta one of the league’s most entertaining sides, but in the past, this has come at the expense of defensive solidity. However, Gasperini has made some reinforcements at the back and with one or two more, it would take some team to stop them in their tracks.
4️⃣ Atalanta to Finish in The Top 4
⬇️ Serie A Relegation – Empoli
One point and one position clear of the relegation zone last season, Empoli survived by the skin of their teeth after M’Baye Niang scored a last-minute winner against Roma on the final day of the season. Unfortunately for Empoli, relying on miracles is no way to maintain top-flight status, and we expect them to struggle this term.
Offensively, Empoli were the worst team in Serie A last season, netting just 29 goals across the entire campaign, the lowest of any side. The underlying stats were pretty woeful too with only bottom-placed Salernitana recording fewer expected goals.
The loss of defender Sebastiano Luperto, who has moved on to Cagliari, will be sure to dent Empoli’s survival hopes given his consistency and important ball-playing role. The pressure will be piled onto the inexperienced forward Sebastiano Esposito, who arrives on loan from Inter, and with Niang likely to leave due to his contract expiring, the Italian youngster has some big boots to fill.
Looking more broadly at the league, in each of the last three seasons two of the relegated sides have not been newly promoted. This data indicates that while newly promoted teams often face challenges in remaining in Serie A, a significant number of established teams also struggle and face relegation.
It would not be a surprise if Empoli went on to contribute to the extension of this trend.
