⛨ Dangerous Teams
🇪🇸 Spain
Luis De La Fuente’s Spain are excellent when it comes to dominating possession and sustaining pressure on their opponent, and so they spend most of the game in their attacking third. La Roja had an average of 6.14 corners per game at Euro 2024, and 7.17 in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
There should be plenty of opportunities for them to lump the ball into the box in this World Cup tournament, and they have dead-ball specialists like Lamine Yamal, Alex Grimaldo and Dani Olmo in their ranks to send the ball in.
🇳🇴 Norway
Norway are another side with elite set-piece takers - Martin Odegaard is the obvious shout, and the Arsenal skipper should be at full fitness by the time this World Cup rolls around.
Julian Ryerson is another player who will cause problems in the final third - he recorded 18 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund this season. Considering Norway have Erling Haaland to pick out, Norway look like they will pose a serious threat from set-pieces.
🏴 Scotland
Scotland are a very physical side, and they are likely to be quite reliant on dead-ball scenarios when it comes to finding the back of the net this summer. Andrew Robertson and John McGinn will be the players in charge of sending the ball into the box, and they will primarily be aiming for the head of Scott McTominay.
Scotland generally go for a target man centre forward, and it’s a toss-up between Oli McBurnie, Lyndon Dykes and George Hirst to lead the line. Regardless of who starts, it’s another physical presence to aim for.
👕 Dangerous Players
🏴 Harry Kane
Harry Kane finished the season with a hat-trick in the DFB Pokal final to secure a domestic double for Bayern, capping off an excellent season for the England captain. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions, and hopes to carry that form forward to the World Cup.
England have notoriously been effective from set-pieces over the years, but with no Harry Maguire in the squad, Kane looks like he will be the primary target from set-pieces.
🇳🇿 Chris Wood
34-year-old Chris Wood will be the talisman for New Zealand at the World Cup, and he is the all-time leading scorer for his national team with 45 goals. The Nottingham Forest striker has been hindered by injuries this season, but he made his return towards the end of the campaign, so he should be close to full fitness by the summer.
Wood scored a hat-trick against Fiji in a 7-0 win during the qualifiers, and all three of them were off his head. He is strong in the air and will be the main target in the box.
🇨🇿 Tomas Soucek
Tomas Soucek is another player who can be devastating from set-pieces, and two of his five goals in the Premier League this season have come from corners. Soucek has built his career around his intelligence in the box - he always seems to pop up in the right positions.
Czechia are another team who are likely to be quite reliant on crosses into the box at the World Cup, which means Soucek should have plenty of chances.
