England travel to the 2026 World Cup headed up by Thomas Tuchel, who has been tasked with delivering the elusive international trophy that England have got so close to over the last few competitions.

Gareth Southgate has given the former Chelsea boss a very solid base to work from, with the positive mood and togetherness inside the England camp being one of the biggest achievements of Southgate’s tenure.

England are one of the favourites to win the World Cup, but are pretty closely ranked alongside the likes of Spain and France for football’s biggest trophy.

🌍 How did England qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Another soft benefit of Southgate’s tenure as England manager was that qualifying became a formality. England won all eight of their qualifying matches to reach the World Cup, and there is now an automatic expectation that England will dominate the qualifying process thanks to Southgate. They did under Tuchel as well.

England showed plenty of defensive resolve during the qualifying process with zero goals conceded across their eight matches. They did take on quite favourable opponents, so the challenge for Tuchel will be to get his team some exposure against the best sides across the world, which has been a bit of an issue for the Three Lions over recent campaigns. Exiting the competition to the first major footballing nation they come up against.

👔 Who is the England manager at the World Cup 2026?

I was a bit unsure when England appointed Thomas Tuchel on such a short contract, but I have come around to the idea of the former Chelsea boss being the man in the dugout for the Three Lions for the upcoming World Cup. And he's since signed a deal keeping him in the job until after Euro 2028.

I got the opportunity to understand Tuchel quite well when he was at Chelsea. It’s clear that he is very tactically astute, and is particularly strong in knockout competitions, which is a massive bonus for England.

The main questions I have around Tuchel at the moment revolve around his lack of experience on the international stage and his wavering temperament, which has led to relationships breaking down at Dortmund, Chelsea and PSG.

It’ll be interesting to see how this develops at the England camp during the tournament. Tuchel is different to Southgate in that he may not always prioritise the overall harmony and mood of the squad, which has been the base of England’s relative success in recent international tournaments.

🔎 Who are England's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Elliot Anderson

Elliot Anderson made an instant impact when Tuchel called him up for the early camps of the season last year and has been a shoo-in for the England squad since those stellar displays.

Anderson fills in a role in the squad which has been a problem area for England over the last few years. Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham should be the other two players in midfield, but the six role has been a tough one to fill.

That being said, it now looks like England have a few players that could play in that role with the emergence of Adam Wharton, Kobbie Mainoo, Alex Scott and James Garner - giving Tuchel a different problem. I still think Anderson has the edge on those options for Tuchel, making him a key player to watch for England at the World Cup.

Anderson will have a lot of the ball and be tasked with progressing the play between the backline and forward options. This should also free up Declan Rice to be more of an option in forward areas.

Potential Betting Angles:

  • Fouls Won

  • Passes

Marc Guehi

I personally think that centre back is the weakest area in the England squad heading into the World Cup, and has been for the last few years.

It’s not like the options are a massive drop-off in quality from the rest of the squad, but more that England aren’t blessed with an abundance of quality as they are in other areas.

Tuchel is limited in who he can trust in those important roles, which is why Guehi may be so crucial to any chance that England have of winning the World Cup.

Guehi earned his big move to Manchester City in January after impressing for Palace over the last few seasons, and this also gives him a greater chance of featuring as England’s main centre back.

I’m not totally convinced by the other centre back options right now. I can see why Tuchel likes Dan Burn, but a new injury to Trevoh Chalobah has further complicated Tuchel’s selection process.

I think Guehi will emerge as Tuchel’s ‘A’ centre back in the pairing as the best of the options that England will have available ahead of the World Cup.

Potential Betting Angles:

  • Fouls Won

  • Headed Shots

Marcus Rashford

There is a lot of promising talent coming through in England, but I think some of the forwards at the other end of their careers may be the decisive players for England at this World Cup.

Harry Kane naturally shoulders the majority of the attacking burden for England, but the latter stages of the last international tournament showed that England cannot rely on Kane alone to find a way.

Marcus Rashford is 28 now, meaning this is likely the last chance he will have to play a central role at the World Cup. I think he has plenty to prove on the international stage too, after missing out on previous tournaments under Gareth Southgate.

I’ve always thought that Rashford had an issue with consistency, but in a knockout tournament it is very valuable to have a player who can produce those random special moments. Rashford provides this, and has also netted 18 goals across his 68 caps for the Three Lions - only Harry Kane (78) has more goals in the current England squad.

Potential Betting Angles

  • Shots on Target

  • Goal Contributions

You can get 8/1 on England to win the World Cup at the time of writing. That price opens up the opportunity to back them each-way, with the knowledge that you'd turn a profit if they lost in the final.

Spain and France are ahead of England in the betting, two other nations with immense squad depth but also recent major international honours to their name.

They should give themselves a chance, they've got strength in depth and a manager who specialises in knockout football. Their last two World Cups have shown promise, going out in the semis and the quarters to the eventual losing finalists.

They'll likely need to play better than they did at Euro 2024, where they relied on individual brilliance to push them onto the right side of fine margins to progress.

England are in Group L. They play Croatia, then Ghana and then Panama. The 3rd-placed progression route could make things easier, but they do have their toughest matches on paper first.

Antoine Semenyo could be a huge test for England's unsettled full backs in the Ghana clash.

Tuchel has plenty of options, he may consider this for the Croatia game on 7th June.

In a 4-2-3-1 formation:

Pickford

James-Konsa-Guehi-O'Reilly

Rice-Anderson

Saka-Bellingham-Gordon

Kane

Wednesday 17th June 9pm: England v Croatia

Tuesday 23rd June 9pm: England v Ghana

Saturday 27th June 10pm: Panama v England

Tuchel is a big Morgan Rogers fan, and Jude Bellingham has had his injury ups and downs this season.

Rogers has played a lot of minutes under Tuchel and should know his role well if he is selected over Bellingham to play behind Harry Kane.

Kane will be on penalties. There are a few candidates for free kicks, Reece James is one, Cole Palmer is too when on the pitch.

Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Bellingham may also fancy a crack.
