📈 Man City v Brighton Form & Tactics

Manchester City were left feeling deflated after their 1-1 draw against Chelsea at the Etihad last time out, with Enzo Fernandez putting away a late winner to earn Chelsea a point. A draw against the Club World Champions may not seem like the biggest setback in isolation, but the context surrounding the game made Manchester City real favourites - and they now find themselves six points behind Arsenal.

Guardiola won’t mind being the chaser in the title race, but will need to ensure that his side stay within touching distance of the Gunners. Six points is probably the maximum distance that Pep can allow between his side and Arsenal, as any bigger gap would lead to the Gunners taking control of this title race. Manchester City will have to beat Brighton for the first time since April 2024 if they want to cut the gap to the top, with Brighton avoiding defeat in each of the last three head-to-head meetings.

Brighton ended a torrid run of form with a 2-0 win over Burnley last time out at the Amex. That game ended a run of six games without a win for the Seagulls, who did face Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa in this recent run. Brighton’s form has been pretty patchy on the road this term, with just two wins from their 10 away matches - conceding 16 goals across these games.

Brighton won the initial league meeting between these sides 2-1 at the Amex, which was a deserved victory as the Seagulls racked up an xG of 2.30 with 36% of the ball, though the penalty they converted made up a large amount of this xG. Brighton still put in a strong performance on that occasion and will be encouraged by their healthy recent head-to-head record against Manchester City, which would indicate that they can cause Guardiola’s side problems here.

📔 Man City v Brighton Formation & Team News

Manchester City slightly tweaked their shape against Chelsea last time out, with Guardiola switching to a 4-3-3, though Foden and Cherki tuck inside with Nunes and O’Reilly pushing forward to hold the width. This was successful at times against Chelsea, but City looked a little predictable as the game went on and Chelsea grew in confidence.

Manchester City only generated an xG of 1.04 in that clash, suggesting that Chelsea were effective in limiting the quality of chances that they were able to generate. The advantage of this system is that Foden and Cherki are positioned perfectly and given freedom to express themselves with three sitting midfielders behind them, which allow Foden and Cherki to stay forward and support Haaland.

Brighton play with quite a bold system, which takes on a 4-2-3-1 shape on paper. Fabian Hurzeler is a very modern coach and encourages his side to press high up the pitch, also integrating a high defensive line to make this approach more effective. Jan Paul van Hecke is key to this style of play; he’s very comfortable on the ball and crucially has the necessary recovery pace to account for players beating Brighton’s high defensive line.

Brighton are currently missing Carlos Baleba, who is away at AFCON. Yankuba Minteh is also a doubt for this clash, with Mats Wieffer confirmed to be on the treatment table. Brighton have a lot of squad depth for a side that isn’t competing in Europe, so Fabian Hurzeler should have plenty of players in reserve to call upon that he trusts.
