This is a tricky away day for the league leaders as they travel north to a fellow top six side in Lincoln City.

The Grecians are having a great start themselves and look on track for another play-off challenge after a few midtable seasons, whilst Stevenage fans will be trying not to get ahead of themselves, whilst acknowledging that they are currently in automatic promotion contention.

Lincoln v Stevenage

League One

Stevenage Double Chance

I am surprised by the difference between the odds of the two teams here. Lincoln are being priced up as favourites, and whilst the price differential suggests that if these teams were playing on a neutral venue that Stevenage would be slight favourites, I would’ve expected there to be more in it, given Stevenage’s start to the season.

Alex Revell’s men have won eight of their 10 league matches and sit top of the league, despite having at least one game in hand over everyone else below them. I do acknowledge, however, that they are also the team that are overperforming their xG data the most in the whole league, scoring over six goals more than expected and conceding at least two fewer than expected.

Interestingly, the team that is second to Stevenage in terms of overperformance of their data in League One is actually Lincoln City. They are also scoring more and conceding fewer goals than expected, so there is perhaps less caution to be given to Stevenage’s overperformance in light of this.

What Stevenage have shown is what all successful teams also demonstrate, they are finding a way to win matches. Whether that is excellent finishing, or great saves, or making the right decisions at the right time, they haven’t fluked their way to eight wins from 10.

📈 Lincoln v Stevenage Form & Stats

Lincoln had a 10 match unbeaten run across all competitions until recently, but they suffered defeat in the EFL Cup to Chelsea, no shame there of course, and then they will have been shaken by a last-minute smash and grab by Exeter City last weekend. How they react to that loss will be instrumental to how this match goes.

As mentioned above, Lincoln are overperforming their data. They rank 16th for xG and 9th for xGA, and, fun fact, they are the only team to average less possession than Stevenage. This could be the first match in history in which neither team wants to kick-off. Lincoln also average the second highest number of fouls per match, and they have had three red cards already, too.

Stevenage’s only League One loss this season was on 23rd August, a 0-1 away loss at Huddersfield, which is totally understandable. Their only other match that was not a win was an away draw at Mansfield, a match in which they comfortably won the xG battle but, for once, failed to convert.

Every other League One match has been a win, they have worked really hard to be successful and their mixture of teamwork, organisation, good recruitment, good coaching, and quality, leaves them in a really confident place at the top of the league now.

Stevenage have conceded the fewest goals in the league, and, interestingly, they have built their success on NOT having the ball, they rank 22nd in League One for possession. They have the fewest accurate passes per match in the league as well, but in an ideal world, Alex Revell would like more chances, they are only 18th for big chances created and 20th for total xG.
