📂 Real Madrid v Man City Cheat Sheet
📈 Real Madrid v Man City Form & Tactics
Real Madrid have always had an issue with player power, a natural result of collecting some of the biggest names in world football, but it feels like it’s reached a new level this season. Reports constantly come out from the club that the players aren’t gelling with Xabi Alonso’s approach, particularly how the coach wants his players to act when they aren’t on the pitch.
This has resulted in some below par displays for Madrid, only winning two of their last five matches across all competitions. A 2-0 defeat at home against Celta Vigo last time out seems to have really pushed things over the edge, with that being Real Madrid’s first defeat at home this season - across both LaLiga and the Champions League.
Madrid were a bit unfortunate in that game, as they created enough chances to get something from it (2.46xG), but two red cards destabilised any chance of a fight back.
Man City recorded their third win in a row against Sunderland last time out, sweeping aside Regis Le Bris’ team, which is no easy task with how Sunderland have been performing this season.
There’s still a real concern for Guardiola when it comes to his side maintaining a solid level of performance on the road - they’re electric at home, but their away matches lack a bit of that intensity and defensive solidity.
The most pleasing aspect for Guardiola in recent matches will be the fact that goals have been spread throughout the side, rather than just having a reliance on Erling Haaland. City have scored 11 goals across their last three matches in the Premier League, only one of these goals has been scored by Haaland.
📔 Real Madrid v Man City Formation & Team News
Alonso is a detail orientated manager, which is a shift away from the laissez faire approach of Carlo Ancelotti, who never really liked giving the attacking players many instructions or structure. This is another reason for the adaptive issues that Madrid have had under the new coach, the attacking players are expected to contribute to the defensive side of the game, which is causing rifts between the players and management.
Xabi Alonso usually sets up his side in a 4-2-3-1 shape, with a real focus on balance. Xabi often leaves some of the big names out of the starting lineup to ensure that his side has an overall balance.
This has led to players like Arda Guler getting more of an opportunity in the side - one notable statistic about Guler is that all seven of his assists across the Champions League and LaLiga have been to Kylian Mbappe.
City line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, with Guardiola taking his side in a more direct and physical direction this season. This isn’t to say that he’s completely abandoned his philosophy around passing and keeping the ball, but two players have made City more adaptable to the intensity of a league like the Premier League.
Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma are these two players - while many sides have been focusing on replicating the intricate football that Guardiola played in his early seasons in the Premier League, the City boss has gone back to basics and has two players in either box who can be real difference makers.
The presence of these two players has allowed City to be less reliant on the players in the middle of the park, most notably Rodri, who is irreplaceable.
