The Sky Sports cameras are at the Select Car Leasing Stadium – Madejski, to most of us – on Thursday, when Reading and Luton face off in their final League One game before Christmas.

Jack Wilshere’s Hatters sit just outside the play-offs and could draw level on points with sixth-place Stockport with all three points.

But it’s the hosts who find themselves in a spot of bother. Reading are only kept out of the bottom four based on their superior goal difference, so Leam Richardson has a big job to keep the Royals in the third tier heading into the new year.

📈 Reading v Luton Form & Stats

Back-to-back defeats have left Reading in 18th heading into this fixture. Two second-half goals saw them fall to a 2-0 loss at promotion-chasing Bradford on Saturday. Prior to that, things were looking up, having lost just once in 10, and that came at table-toppers Cardiff.

It’s a big festive period for Richardson’s side, who have trips to Plymouth and Peterborough coming up, as they look to climb the League One table.

Cohen Bramall’s stunning free-kick put Luton into the lead against rock-bottom Port Vale on Saturday, but the Hatters didn’t capitalise on taking the lead. The Valiants responded with two goals – their first in seven games – before Mads Andersen headed home a corner to share the spoils.

That’s three straight stalemates for Jack Wilshere’s side. But on the flip side, they’ve lost just one of their last eight games in the league – last month’s 5-0 hammering at Barnsley. So, things are turning after their slow start.

History in this fixture is also on Luton’s side. They’re unbeaten in their last six against Reading (W3 D3), although the last of their meetings came in a 1-1 draw in 2023 when Andy Carroll scored and was sent off for the Royals.
