Bayer Leverkusen v RB Leipzig
📅
Kick Off: Saturday 31st August at 17:30
🏆
Competition: Bundesliga
📺
Watch Live: Sky Sports Mix
Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are gearing up for an electrifying Bundesliga showdown.
Leverkusen will aim to keep the majority of possession, tiring the opposition out before utilising the electric pace of their wingbacks to drive forward and set up Florian Wirtz and Victor Boniface in front of goal. Xabi Alonso’s men will be determined to defend their home turf and build on their opening win against Borussia Monchengladbach.
If last season is anything to go off, RB Leipzig may struggle against Bayer Leverkusen, particularly away, but they’ll be eager to take something from the reigning champions to strengthen their top-four ambitions.
With both teams having won their openers and plenty at stake, this match promises to be a thrilling battle between two of Germany’s top clubs.
Bayer Leverkusen v RB Leipzig Best Bets
➡️ Bayer Leverkusen to win @ 1.75 with Paddy Power
➡️ RB Leipzig to have 4+ shots on target @ 1.50 with Paddy Power
➡️ Robert Andrich to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.40 with Paddy Power
Backing Bayer Leverkusen to win at 1.75 with Paddy Power is one possible route to value given the respective form of the sides and their performances last season.
That said, Leverkusen’s defence looked a bit shabby in their opener against Borussia Monchengladbach, conceding two goals and seven shots on target. Along similar lines, you can back RB Leipzig to have 4+ shots on target at 1.50 with Paddy Power, or for 5+ shots on target at 2.10. Either of these could prove worthy of bet-builder inclusion depending on what odds range you’re looking for.
In the fouls market, Robert Andrich to commit 1+ foul at 1.40 with Paddy Power or for 2+ fouls at 2.88 stands out given his form and reputation. He sinned three times in his opener whilst also drawing two free-kicks himself, showing the number of duels he tends to involve himself in. The German averaged 1.23 fouls per 90 last season in the Bundesliga but significantly bettered this during the Euros when he sinned 12 times, averaging one every 29 minutes.

📊 Bayer Leverkusen Form and Stats
You’d do well to put together a more typical Leverkusen performance than their opener if you tried. Having dominated proceedings, recording significantly more shots, shots on target, possession and pretty much any other metric you could come up with, Xabi Alonso’s men still relied upon a 101st-minute Wirtz winner to dismiss Borussia Monchengladbach.
It was the German’s second goal of the game and it looks like Leverkusen’s starlet has picked up exactly where he left off last season. After scooping up the Bundesliga Player of the Year award courtesy of his eleven goals and eleven assists, Wirtz also impressed on the international stage during the Euros.
Consequently, it’s of unparalleled importance that Leverkusen perform to a similar standard this season to ensure they keep a hold of some of their big-name players. So far they’ve managed to fight off interest from Spain and England over the likes of Wirtz, Frimpong and co, but they’ll surely come swooping once more and Alonso will need more success this season if he wants to convince the players of his long-term project.
📊 RB Leipzig Form and Stats
It was a different story entirely for Leipzig who scraped a 1-0 win against VFL Bochum in a game they probably would have expected to breeze through. They registered just three shots on target, one fewer than Bochum, and accumulated 0.94xG compared to the 1.32 they conceded.
Nonetheless, they did get the result they were looking for, albeit at the expense of club captain Willi Orban who picked up a red card and will be suspended for their clash with Beyer Leverkusen.
RB Leipzig have been consistent in recent years, finishing in the top six in each of the last six seasons, however, they’re yet to mount a serious title challenge. That’s not necessarily expected this year and most fans would probably be happy with the financial benefits associated with Champions League qualification.
It’s worth keeping an eye on Xavi Simons who’ll be desperate to open his account for the season. He registered 19 goal contributions last season for Leipzig, who are no doubt grateful to have secured his services for another season on loan from PSG amid rumoured interest from other clubs in Germany and overseas.
⚔️ Bayer Leverkusen v RB Leipzig Head-to-Head
Since Xabi Alonso took over, Bayer Leverkusen have clashed four times with RB Leipzig, losing the first but reigning victorious in the most recent three. Last season both legs were thrilling affairs, each finishing 3-2 in favour of Leverkusen, the most recent of which was courtesy of a 91st-minute Piero Hincapié winner. The young centre-back is now rumoured to be on the verge of a move to Liverpool.
Looking a bit further back, these sides have historically been pretty evenly matched. They’ve only come across each other 16 times, going the way of Leverkusen on five occasions, Leipzig seven times and also resulting in four draws.
Jonathan Tah has emerged as an unlikely hero in the past two showings of this fixture, scoring in each, however, that’s not to say it’s a market we suggest you explore given he’s only managed 14 career goals. Although his side will not go into this match favourites, Xavi Simons scored for Leipzig last time out against Leverkusen and might be a more realistic candidate.
