The national team is looking to surpass their best-ever result, achieved at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when ithey reached the Round of 16. Ecuador are coming off their best World Cup qualifying campaign ever, finishing in 2nd place ahead of the likes of Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia. 🌍 How did Ecuador qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Ecuador recorded their best qualifying campaign in history. Across 18 matches, the team earned eight wins, eight draws, and only two losses. Only Argentina on Matchday 1 (1-0) and Brazil in Matchday 7 (1-0) managed to get the better of them.

The team’s defensive performances were undoubtedly the major highlight. Ecuador conceded just five goals in 18 matches, finishing with the best defensive record in the entire qualifying competition. On the other hand, the attack left much to be desired, scoring only 14 goals, one of the lowest totals.

Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié, Enner Valencia, and John Yeboah formed the backbone of La Tri throughout qualifying. Those players are expected to be the foundation of the squad that Sebastián Beccacece will field at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

👔 Who is the Ecuador manager at the World Cup 2026?

Sebastián Beccacece took charge of Ecuador after the 2024 Copa América and has done an excellent job since then. The Argentine coach, previously an assistant to Jorge Sampaoli with Chile, Argentina, and Sevilla, and later head coach of Defensa y Justicia and Elche, prioritises defensive solidity and collective tactical discipline.

Under his leadership, La Tri finished 2nd in the qualifiers, behind only reigning world champion Argentina. Beccacece has overseen a gradual rebuilding process, with players such as Kendry Páez, regarded as the jewel of Ecuador’s new generation at just 18 years old, sharing the spotlight with Enner Valencia, who at 36 is Ecuador’s all-time World Cup top scorer with six goals.

🔎 Who are Ecuador's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Enner Valencia

The 36-year-old striker is Ecuador’s all-time World Cup leading scorer with six goals and is also the nation’s all-time top scorer.

Beyond his experience, Valencia remains a crucial attacking reference point for the national team. He scored six of Ecuador’s 14 goals during qualifying, a statistic that highlights his importance for them.

The striker has more than 100 caps for Ecuador, representing the South American nation for over a decade. He has already announced that he is expected to retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup.

Valencia currently plays for Pachuca in Mexico after spending three seasons with Internacional in Brazil. For the Mexican club, he has made 22 appearances and contributed to nine goals.

Kendry Páez

At 19 years old, Kendry Páez is no longer just one of Ecuador’s brightest prospects - he is becoming an established player. The attacking midfielder appeared in 12 of Ecuador’s 18 qualifying matches and started eight of them.

He contributed to two goals and became the youngest player ever to score for Ecuador in World Cup qualifying history. He is undoubtedly a player to watch during the tournament.

Páez belongs to Chelsea but has spent time on loan at various clubs to gain experience. He has played for Independiente del Valle (Ecuador), Strasbourg (Germany), and currently for River Plate (Argentina).

For the Argentine side, the left-footed playmaker has contributed to two goals in 13 appearances this season, often coming off the bench. As the team’s creative engine, Páez can change games with his passing and dribbling ability, making player fouls drawn markets particularly attractive.

Piero Hincapié

Ecuador’s defensive strength owes much to the efficiency, game intelligence, and leadership of Piero Hincapié. At 24 years old, the Arsenal centre back was a key figure throughout qualifying and is expected to maintain that role at the World Cup.

Hincapié was an undisputed starter during the cycle and, alongside Willian Pacho, forms a defensive partnership combining physical dominance and technical quality.

The defender won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen before moving to Arsenal, where he recently became a Premier League champion.

Due to Ecuador’s defensive tactical setup, Hincapié is heavily involved in defensive actions. During qualifying, he ranked 11th in fouls committed and received three cards, including one red card.

On the positive side, he led La Tri in successful tackles throughout the tournament, averaging more than one successful tackle per 90 minutes.

Ecuador are 100/1 to win the World Cup, which looks a bit of value considering their dark horse status and remarkable defensive solidity.

They'll be very tough opponents in the knockout stages. If they can hold their nerve and maybe win a couple of penalty shoot-outs, they could go very deep and potentially all the way.

Ecuador are in Group E with Germany, Curacao and Ivory Coast.

Ivory Coast v Ecuador: Monday 15th June at 12am BST.

Ecuador v Curacao: Sunday 21st June at 1am BST.

Ecuador v Germany: Thursday 25th June at 9pm BST.

They'd be worse off, but still competent. Their sophisticated defensive process sets them up well to cope, Jordy Alcivar would likely come into midfield.

Enner Valencia, Jordy Caicedo or Kendry Paez will take penalties, depending on who is on the pitch.

Alcivar, Paez and Estupinan are the contenders from attacking free kicks.
