The Irish champions will look to become the first club from the League of Ireland to defeat an English club in UEFA competition when they meet at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin.

Shelbourne have finished their domestic season for 2025, so are now purely training for their Conference League encounters. They completed the LOI Premier League season in third place, they actually suffered the fewest defeats of any team in the competition, but too few goals and too many draws cost them in their title defence.

In the Conference League there have been four matches, and Shels have been unable to score in any of them so far. Whilst mathematically they can still reach the top 24, they would need to win both remaining league phase games and rely on results going their way to progress.

Crystal Palace are flying in the Premier League, sitting fourth in the table, which is especially good given the fact that they are playing the dreading Thursday-Sunday schedule. However, they don't seem to be handling the European ties quite as well as the league play.

Perhaps this is understandable given their rookie nature, this is the club's first UEFA campaign, but Glasner himself is an old hand at this having won the Europa League with Frankfurt. There has been a case of managing his squad in this competition, but it has left Palace in a fairly precarious 18th place in the table with only two games to go.

Shelbourne have used different formations under Joey O'Brien, but I think that the former Irish champions will probably go for a safer 5-3-2 shape, at least to begin with, but at some stage they will have to come out and play if they have any ambition to progress in the competition.

Obviously with them not having any League play now, there is time and space to have players available. James Norris is back from a UEFA suspension and he is likely to slot into the back three in a full strength Shelbourne outfit.

There will be personnel rotation from Oliver Glasner here. There are injuries to Ismaila Sarr and Daniel Muñoz anyway, but rotation to include the likes of Jaydee Canvot, Will Hughes, Jefferson Lerma, Nathaniel Clyne & Justin Devenny is highly likely.

What won't change is the system. This 3-4-2-1 shape has served Palace and Glasner exceptionally well, and all players, whether first team or rotation, are well schooled in the requirements for each role in it.
