Scotland were very impressive in their Euro qualification journey, finishing in second place, just four points behind leaders Spain, who were the only team to get the better of the Scots.
With five wins from eight, scoring a respectable 17 goals, the tenth highest scoring team in the groups despite playing 2 less games than those in Group H, I and J, their spot in this year’s finals was thoroughly deserved.
They have however lost their last two friendly matches since cliniching qualification, against Northern Ireland and Netherlands but were very unlucky not to see victory in the former considering they had 83% of the ball.
Scotland’s qualifying period was full of goals and action, with three or more goals being witnessed in five of their eight games, including two 3-0 wins from Steve Clarke’s side. They also average 2.38 yellow cards per 90 during this stage, committing an average of 12.80 fouls. However both of these stats were outdone by their opponents, with averages of 2.50 yellows and 13.60 fouls for Scotland’s opposition. This certainly highlights the disciplinary markets as a place of value for Scotland.
Scott McTominay was a pivotal part of Scotland’s qualification efforts, netting seven times and picking up an assist in his eight appearances. The Manchester United man finished the fifth highest scorer in the Euro qualifiers, tied with his club teammate Rasmus Holjund, but surpassing the likes of Erling Haaland (6), Bruno Fernandes (6) and Bukayo Saka (4). He averaged a decent 1.10 shots on target per 90 during qualifying from 2.67 shots and he will certainly be the main to look for inspiration during the competition.
