Marseille welcome Atalanta with Roberto De Zerbi’s side hoping to emulate their 4-0 win over Ajax in their first home game of the Champions League.

Atlanta have failed to win any of their last five matches across all competitions, with four draws in this sequence. This period has cranked up the pressure on head coach Ivan Juric.

Our Football Match Stats, including Marseille v Atalanta, provide further insight.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to have 1+ Shot on Target

Aubameyang has been effective in leading the line since he rejoined Marseille from Saudi Pro League side, Al Qadasiya, over the summer. He netted 30 goals across his 51 appearances for Marseille before making that move and has returned with some confidence having registered nine goal contributions across his 12 appearances for Marseille so far this term.

Aubameyang has had seven shots on target across his five starts in Ligue 1 this term (1.16 per 90) with this record returning three goals domestically for the 36 year old. Aubameyang is still more than capable of performing at this level despite his age, he scored his first goal of the Champions League campaign against Ajax as Marseille ran out 4-0 winners over the Dutch side.

Aubameyang created three chances and one shot in Marseille’s 2-1 defeat against Sporting last time out. I think Marseille will control and dominate this game with Atalanta without a win in their last five matches, and also losing 4-0 on their last trip to France which was against PSG on Matchday 1.

Nicola Zalewski to commit 1+ Foul

Zawelski is expected to line up as a left wing back here which will pit him directly against Mason Greenwood. Greenwood has been one of Marseille’s most influential players this season and is very strong when it comes to winning fouls.

Greenwood has won 11 fouls across his 10 appearances in Ligue 1 this term (1.26 per 90) as well as winning a further two fouls in the Champions League (0.80 per 90). These metrics are just a sample of Greenwood’s ability when it comes to winning fouls, he won 37 fouls across his 34 Ligue 1 appearances last term (1.18 per 90) so it is a consistent part of his game which should come to the fore here.

Zawelski is quite a forward thinking wingback and gets caught out defensively at times when marauding forward. He averaged 0.84 fouls committed per 90 across his 23 appearances in Serie A last season and also isn’t the most experienced at the Champions League level.

Over 1.5 Marseille Goals

I think Marseille could come away with quite a comfortable victory here. I’m really not a fan of Ivan Juric who is Atalanta’s current head coach, if you recognise his name it’s probably from his time at Southampton last season where he was sacked after taking on the role from Russell Martin.

I’m not quite sure how he’s jumped from that to Atalanta with his stint at Torino doing a lot of the heavy lifting for his appointment at Atalanta. The Italian side have only managed to win one of their last eight matches, and this could be the final nail in the coffin for Juric seeing as Marseille fired four goals past Ajax in their previous home game in the Champions League.

Marseille have scored 18 goals across their five home matches in Ligue 1 this term (3.6 per game). I really don't think that Atalanta will be able to live with this scoring power and could crumble in a similar manner to Ajax with confidence low in the Atalanta camp at the moment.

Marseille to take 4+ Corners

Marseille are averaging 5.27 corners per game in Ligue 1 this season. This average drops slightly but still remains above the line we require here when looking at their home fixtures in Ligue 1 this term (4.60 per game).

Roberto De Zerbi is far from a set piece specialist but his side are able to come away with healthy corner counts due to how they dominate the game. Atalanta are likely to be forced back towards their own box here, as they were in their 4-0 defeat to PSG where they allowed the Parisians to rack up six corners.

Marseille managed to rack up four corners on Matchday 1 in their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. They didn’t manage to hit this total in their games against Ajax and Sporting, but both of those games had wider context with Marseille being reduced to 10 men against Sporting and being completely in control early on against Ajax.

📈 Marseille v Atalanta Form & Tactics

Marseille currently sit second in Ligue 1 having won seven of their 11 matches. They are only two points behind PSG which, even at this stage of the season, is a positive sign with Luis Enrique’s side already having a substantial lead in Ligue 1 by this stage last campaign. It’s an exciting team that Roberto De Zerbi has put together, but he’ll be eager to pick up some more points in the Champions League with Marseille losing two of their three games so far.

Marseille’s recent form hasn’t been the best with just two wins from their last five matches across all competitions. They’ve lost two games in this period with those defeats both coming on the road against Sporting and Lens. Marseille have won four of their five home games in Ligue 1 this term, so they are certainly more comfortable in front of their home fans than on the road this season.

Atalanta have drawn four of their last five matches under the guidance of Ivan Juric. They aren’t a very fun side to watch with their games often ending up quite dry with Juric unwilling to let the side express themselves. Atalanta have won one of their three games in the Champions League so far, which was a 2-1 win over Club Brugge. That victory was also the last time that Atalanta won a game, back on the 30th September.

Atalanta are also underperforming in Serie A with just two wins from their 10 matches. Seven of these games have ended in draws so Atalanta aren’t on the losing end regularly, but they also aren’t showing enough ambition to suggest that they can find their way through this league phase as part of the top 24.

📔Marseille v Atalanta Formation & Team News

Marseille are expected to line up in 4-2-3-1 shape but Roberto De Zerbi being in the dugout means that this will rarely be the shape you see on the pitch. De Zerbi is obsessed with positional play and baiting the press, his sides tend to dominate the ball and can be frustrating to watch with multiple small passing sequences to bypass the opposition press.

Marseille have a very lengthy injury list at the moment, including the likes of Weah, Medina, Kondogbia and Gouri. Emerson is also suspended for this encounter after being sent off against Sporting in Marseille’s most recent Champions League assignment.

Atalanta will line up in a 3-4-3, but this is far from the set up that brought Gian Piero Gasperini so much success as the Atalanta head coach. This is a more negative system with more constraints on the attacking players which make Atalanta quite predictable. This is a team capable of playing more expansive football, but Juric is very attached to his style of play.
