Barcelona to Win

Barcelona have had a few small issues in recent weeks when it comes to the security of their backline, but they should prove too strong for Club Brugge here. The Belgian side lost 4-0 to Bayern Munich in their most recent Champions League assignment which shows the disparity in quality between Brugge and the elite sides in Europe.

Barcelona have won two of their three matches in the Champions League this season with the exception of their 2-1 defeat at the hands of PSG, who currently lead the way in the league phase of the Champions League and are also the reigning champions of the competition. Barcelona easily dispatched Newcastle and Olympiakos, netting eight goals across those two matches.

Over 2.5 Goals

Each of Barcelona’s last five matches across all competitions have seen over 2.5 goals. They’ve seen 3+ goals in 13 of their 14 matches across all competitions this season with the exception of their 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano at the start of the season.

Club Brugge have seen 3+ goals in three of their last five matches across all competitions. They’ve seen over 2.5 goals in all three of their Champions League matches with Club Brugge notably managing to score in two of these games with only Bayern Munich keeping them out.

Barcelona have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last five matches across all competitions. Hansi Flick’s side play with a high line which is being exposed more regularly than it was last season with sides starting to time their runs to perfection to beat the offside trap.

I think Club Brugge could get some joy from that avenue and while that may not be enough to get all three points, it can lead to the home side contributing to what is expected to be a healthy goal tally here.

Marcus Rashford to Score or Assist

Marcus Rashford has scored or assisted in all three of his appearances in the Champions League for Barcelona this season. He’s netted braces against Newcastle and Olympiakos as well as setting up Barcelona’s sole goal in their 2-1 defeat to PSG.

Rashford’s recent form is also very promising when it comes to looking to back this selection. He’s registered five goal contributions across his last five appearances across all competitions, with his latest contribution being a goal against Elche as Barcelona ran out 3-1 winners.

Barcelona’s scoring power is pretty much unrivalled by any other side in Europe and Rashford can maintain his solid form against a Club Brugge side that conceded four goals against Bayern Munich in their most recent Champions League assignment.

Joaquin Seys to commit 1+ Foul

This selection is mainly informed by Seys’ potential opponent here rather than his own foul record. Seys has committed just four fouls across his nine starts in the Belgian top flight this term (0.46 per 90) but I’d expect Lamine Yamal to force a rise in this particular metric.

Yamal has won 10 fouls across his seven appearances in LaLiga this term (1.65 per 90) and a further five fouls across two appearances in the Champions League (2.73 per 90). Yamal averaged 1.96 fouls won per 90 across his 13 appearances in the Champions League last season, so we can expect him to cause Seys real issues at times with this strong foul won record.

Yamal drew four fouls from Nuno Mendes in Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to PSG in the Champions League, and also drew a foul from Olympiacos' fullback with the defender contesting seven duels on that occasion.

📈 Club Brugge v Barcelona Form & Tactics

Club Brugge will set up to be pragmatic here. They managed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League last season, so they could be an awkward assignment for Barcelona on the road but their 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich last time out would suggest that there is a significant gap in quality between the sides.

Club Brugge have been strong domestically, winning four of their last five matches across all competitions and nine of their 13 games in the Belgian top flight overall. They aren’t quite top of the pile yet with USG currently sitting first in the First Division. Notably, Club Brugge haven’t lost a game at home yet - winning five and drawing one of their encounters.

Barcelona will set up in a 4-2-3-1 and persist with their high line which has been causing a few issues recently. Hansi Flick has ingrained this high line into the psyche of his players, but opposition sides are starting to come up with answers. This has led to Barcelona failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their last five matches across all competitions, including a crushing 4-1 defeat against Sevilla.

Barcelona take the risk with this high line because it’s worth trying to platform their attacking players in the final third as often as possible. Hansi Flick will believe that his side can outscore most opposition, so he is willing to sacrifice defensive solidity for attacking expression. However, this caught Barcelona out at the semi final stage of the Champions League last year so it’ll be interesting to see if it is sustainable across the course of a campaign.

📔 Club Brugge v Barcelona Formation & Team News

Club Brugge lined up in a 4-1-4-1 in their 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich last time out and I’d expect another pragmatic shape here. Brugge haven’t played with a three at the back too often this season so Nicky Hayen is likely to persist with four at the back, with the aim of stifling Barcelona’s progress by packing the middle of the park.

Barcelona will continue to line up in their 4-2-3-1 shape and look to platform the likes of Rashford and Yamal as often as possible. Barcelona are the best attacking side in Europe in my view, but that balance with defensive solidity is lacking at the moment which sees Hansi Flick’s side involved in far too many end to end games - as demonstrated by the fact they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last five matches across all competitions.

Barcelona remain without starting goalkeeper Joan Garcia which is a blow as he is a fantastic shot stopper. An even bigger miss is Pedri who isn’t expected to return to the side until at least mid November. This could make Brugge’s attempt to close off central areas more effective as Pedri is usually the player to find a way through this congested area.
