These are the types of matches that South Shields were hoping to be hosting on a regular basis when their ownership took on an ambitious plan to rise up through the leagues.

That rise has stalled in the National League North, but Shrewsbury beware, the standard of the NLN is very high indeed. There is a potential upset on the cards here.

These South Shields v Shrewsbury Betting Stats offer further insight ahead of Sunday's FA Cup clash.

South Shields Double Chance

There are 27 places between the teams in the pyramid, but there are some wrinkles to this as well. We know that teams that go up from the National League into League Two tend to do very well, indeed, there hasn't been a relegation straight back to non-league in decades, whilst a number of teams have gone straight through League Two into League One.

Whilst I'm not suggesting that South Shields are a better team on neutral ground than Shrewsbury, I do think that an FA Cup tie up in the North East with a sell-out crowd does reduce the gap between the teams by a fair margin.

To me, this makes the edge towards South Shields a tempting bet, there is certainly not much on the other side to sway me that way. South Shields have won six and drawn one of their home league games with a goal difference of +15, while Shrewsbury have won one of their eight away matches in all competitions this season, losing five of these games.

Over 1.5 Goals

As we have seen above, South Shields’ home record this season is strong in terms of results, but also in goals. They have scored 18 in seven home league matches so far, and then four in the last qualification round at home, too.

They are up against a defence here which is the best that they will have come across this season, by a long way, but the nature of the game, the fact that it is an FA Cup tie, televised, with the home crowd behind them, allows me to believe that they will give this everything from an attacking perspective.

Of course, this can always open the door to an improving attacking force in terms of Shrewsbury. They have scored in seven of their last nine matches, including scoring five goals across their previous three outings.

📈 South Shields v Shrewsbury Form & Stats

Make no mistake, South Shields are a good side. They suffered defeat to Macclesfield last weekend, but that was their first defeat of the season. They sit atop the National League North table with 32 points from 13 matches. They smashed Spalding 4-0 in the last qualifying round to make it into the First Round proper.

The big strength of Shields has been their defence. They are the only club in National League North to have conceded fewer than 10 goals, with their total of just six. They average two goals a game as well going forwards, with Paul Blackett and Cedwyn Scott a formidable strike duo.

Shrewsbury are 22nd in League Two, which makes them 90th of the whole professional structure, so they look ripe to be picked off by a non-league club. However, they are unbeaten in four league matches, picking up eight points from two home wins and two away draws, the last of which was very dramatic with a last minute Shrews goal being cancelled out by a 90+5 Oldham equaliser.

It has been in attack where Shrewsbury have been really lacking this season. They are 22nd for xG, 21st for shots on target, and 23rd for big chances created, only 13 big chances in 14 matches played. Defensively, Town have actually been really solid. Five clean sheets is the second highest in the division, with only 14.5xG conceded as well.
