📁 Man City v Southampton Cheat Sheet
📈 Man City v Southampton Form & Stats
Manchester City have found their stride again at the perfect point in the season. Pep Guardiola is a master of the run-in and we’re seeing his genius again, with his side currently on a five game winning streak. What’s been particularly impressive is the calibre of team that City have beaten in this period, overcoming the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea - without even conceding a goal against any of these sides.
City’s success in the second half of the season almost entirely comes back to how active they were in the January transfer window. Signing Guehi and Semenyo have separated them from the other elite sides in the division, and may just pull them ahead of Arsenal in what is set to be one of the closest ends to a Premier League season we’ve seen in recent times. Guardiola and City also have an exceptional record at Wembley, most recently beating Arsenal 2-0 in the EFL Cup final.
Southampton have been seriously impressive under Tonda Eckert so far, and look on course to at least get a shot at promotion via the playoffs. Eckert has engineered a very impressive turnaround after Southampton were lingering towards the relegation zone in the early stages of the season under Will Still - who wasn’t really as bad as the hard stats makeout, with the underlying numbers suggesting that Southampton had the quality of a playoff side, as they are now showing.
📔 Man City v Southampton Formation & Team News
I’d expect Guardiola to rotate pretty significantly here given that City travelled to play Burnley on Wednesday, and travel again to take on Everton next week. James Trafford should start in goal, as he has been doing in the cup competitions this season, while there may also be chances for the likes of Foden, Reijnders and Ait-Nouri who have all had to be patient for starting opportunities this term.
City have been playing with a bold but effective 4-2-4 shape when out of possession. Arsenal found this defensive structure very difficult to breakdown as they were reluctant to go long, but Southampton won’t be as precious about their style of play here so skipping out that initial block of four could allow them to create overloads at times of 3v2 situations against City’s backline - which tends to be Guehi and Khusanov with the fullbacks pushing up high.
Southampton will play in a very similar manner to how they set up against Fulham and Arsenal. They rode their luck at times in both of those games, and the same will have to happen at times here if they want to progress to the final as City clearly have more quality than the Saints. Flynn Downes is suspended for this clash after picking up too many yellow cards in the FA Cup which is a small blow to Southampton’s chances.
