Few would have predicted at the start of the season that Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen would meet in the Europa League final, yet no one would now argue that these are the deserving teams to meet on this stage.
Leverkusen’s tale is now well known. Xabi Alonso brings his side to Dublin without having suffered a defeat in any competition this season. B04 have this match, and then the DFL Pokal final at the weekend, to navigate to complete what will go down as one of the most remarkable campaigns of all time – going unbeaten in all competitions.
In some ways, the achievements of Atalanta have been pushed into the shade because of this. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have only been a little less remarkable, though. With a comparatively small budget, they have secured a top five finish in Serie A, sealing qualification for the Champions League next season, and reached the Coppa Italia final.

⚔️ Atalanta v Bayer Leverkusen Head-to-Head
Atalanta and Leverkusen’s only previous meeting came in this competition during the 2021/22 campaign. In those encounters, the Italian side picked up a 3-2 win at home before winning 1-0 in Germany.
Perhaps surprisingly, there are several more survivors from those defeats in the Leverkusen squad, including major stars Jeremy Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Edmond Tapsoba and Florian Wirtz. At Atalanta, though, there has been a greater turnover in players with all of those who were involved in their four goals having moved on.
Could this be enough to spook the Germans? Given their form, it would be surprising.
In terms of the respective Europa League runs of these clubs this season, Atalanta have not faced German opposition but B04 beat Roma 4-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
📊 Atalanta Form and Stats
Atalanta might have lost the Coppa Italia final to Juventus a week ago, but otherwise their form is holding up nicely despite playing every midweek since returning from the March international break. This will be their 16th game in 51 days.
They arrive for this game off the back of a 2-0 win over Lecce, in which they rotated heavily following their midweek cup disappointment. Indeed, juggling the squad has been a key part of Gasperini’s job in recent weeks. Despite this, Atalanta have seven wins in their last nine.
Charles De Ketelaere is a man in form. He has two goals and two assists in his last four matches and is priced at 3.40 with Paddy Power to stretch that run.
Gianluca Scamacca is also in excellent touch. The former West Ham striker has scored five Europa League goals in the knockout rounds, finding the net in four of six matches. He has also scored in five of his last six in Serie A, despite playing more than 65 minutes only once.
Scamacca averages 3.8 shots and 1.6 shots on target per 90 in Serie A this season and has managed at least three shots in five of his last six games. He has rarely been cut free for much more than an hour but could get more minutes in this encounter given the stakes.
As a team, meanwhile, Atalanta have generated more than 1.5 xG in six of their last seven matches in Serie A and the Europa League. In each of those games, they have boasted a higher xG figure than their opponents.
This has been achieved despite a relatively high foul count. Five times in their last nine games, Gasperini’s side have accrued 16 fouls or more, including 20 at the weekend against Lecce. Although they do not typically pick up many cards, they have received seven across their last two games. La Dea are 1.87 to see over 2.5 cards in this game.
📊 Bayer Leverkusen Form and Stats
Leverkusen have been devastating in recent weeks, despite managing the minutes of their star players. Alonso’s side have won four of their last five matches across all competitions, doing so with impressive performances.
B04 have generated at least 2 xG in each of their last five matches, hitting a high of 4.2 xG against Bochum ten days ago. They have scored 16 goals across these games while they have netted at least twice in each of their last six.
Indeed, it has been their offensive play that has underpinned their remarkable run. They have not been infallible defensively and have conceded goals in six of their last eight. Both teams to score here is 1.75.
Reading a good deal into the form of individuals is tricky given the way in which minutes have been juggled lately.
Victor Boniface is their leading scorer across all competitions this season with 21 goals. He has netted in each of his last three, although two were penalties. His game-time in the Europa League has been shared by Patrik Schick (both have scored five goals in the competition), which means he is unlikely to play more than an hour.
Florian Wirtz is the real driving force of Alonso’s attack, with 18 goals and 19 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. He is one of the players whose minutes have been managed, starting only one of the last five, meaning he will be fresh for this one. He is 2.20 to score or assist.
As a team, it is worth noting they have picked up at least three bookings in five of their last eight, despite keeping their foul count down to below 12 in all but two of those games. The exceptions were, however, the two away Europa League encounters they played.
Across their last 19 games, meanwhile, they have won at least five corners on 18 occasions. This can be backed at 1.57 here.
💰 Atalanta v Bayer Leverkusen Best Bets
Leverkusen come into this match the fresher and more confident of these two sides. Leverkusen to win at 1.83 on Paddy Power (in normal time), is worth taking.
There is superb value in a fully fit Florian Wirtz to score or assist at 2.20 with Paddy.
The outstanding bet on Leverkusen, though, is on them over 4.5 Leverkusen corners at 1.50, also on Paddy Power. They have done this in 18 of their last 19 games.
Meanwhile, Atalanta’s high recent foul count suggests that the price of 4.33 to commit at least 16 fouls with Paddy looks a strong one. Similarly, over 2.5 Atalanta cards at 1.87 offers value given referee Istvan Kovacs averages over six cards per match in European football and 5.30 overall this season.
