The two sides met at Molineux in September with the Old Gold pulling off the ultimate smash-and-grab. Ruben Dias opened the scoring with an own goal, Julian Alvarez equalising at the right end and Hwang-Hee Chan scored the winner for Wolves deep into the second half.

The stats show the domination we are used to with Pep Guardiola’s team. They were defeated by two goals but faced just one shot on target, compared to their 8 attempts at the Wolverhampton goal. Wolves didn’t muster a single corner in the game either. What was reasonably contested was the card count with six for Wolves and five for City. The home side arrive in fine fettle, winning their last five games and unbeaten since December in the league. The blue half of Manchester is a fortress this season, with no visitors picking up 3 points here and City averaging 2.22 xGF and a miserly 0.95 xGA. They have scored 82 goals already this season, the second-highest total in the league and are also the second-best defensively, with just 32 goals conceded all season. City will be welcomed back to the Etihad after two games on the road, hitting six goals in the process without reply.

Although the visitors won their last game v Luton, they’ve lost four and drawn two of their previous six games in a miserable run of form. Given that Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Burnley were among those fixtures, Wolves fans would be understandably disappointed not to have picked up more points.

The Wanderers have been awol in front of goal, ranking 14th in the table for goals scored (1.37 per game) and 15th for xGF (1.16). It’s safe to say they’ve not been the most entertaining side to watch and have struggled to break lesser teams than City down. With just 3 games left in their season and little incentive other than prize money, it’s difficult to see a Wolves win on the evidence before us.
