After a busy and bustling midweek of Premiership and Championship drama we go again with a near-full SPFL fixture list this weekend. My Scottish treble was a winner during the week earning us a nice profit and contributing to what has been a nice run on my Scottish bets of late so who fancies my acca this weekend? I’ve done my research, dug through heaps of fans forums and found my four favourite selections across the four divisions, and we’ll start in the top flight between two sides with varying degrees of form.
St. Mirren v Dundee
🏟
Saturday 30th October – 3:00PM KO

Scottish Premiership
4-0 down at half-time. At home. To the side bottom of the league. Who hadn’t won a single game all season. Safe to say the Ross County game didn’t go to plan for James McPake and Dundee and the 5-0 loss to their nearest rivals leaves them in a sticky situation and devoid of the confidence they’d built over the two results prior to the thumping from County on Wednesday night.
The result really has shifted the mood at Dens, as things had picked up after taking four points from Aberdeen and Hearts but such a devastating loss has brought the fans right back to earth with a shudder. Their latest thumping means they’re now just a point off the foot of the table and have still won just once all campaign, beating Aberdeen a few weeks ago in a result that looks to have kicked Aberdeen into something of a mini revival.
Dundee have really struggled back in the top flight and with all of the sides around them at least avoiding defeat during the week, they are the big losers which is far from ideal after such an embarrassing result. St. Mirren are one of the sides who could be pulled into something of a relegation scrap if they’re not totally careful but in welcoming a desolate Dundee to Paisley they should be able to pad their points tally out and assert themselves in the top six race that is beginning to form. They’ve got a lot of attacking talent, even if Jamie McGrath isn’t yet fit to return, and have proven to be a difficult side to beat under Jim Goodwin, this season particularly. They’ve lost just three of their 11 Premiership games this season, with the trio of defeats coming against the current top three in Rangers, Celtic and Hearts. There’s no shame in that list and it’s unlikely to be added to by Dundee this weekend, I’ve just opted for St. Mirren Draw No Bet in case there’s a bit of a reaction from McPake’s men.

Prediction: St. Mirren Draw No Bet
Kilmarnock v Queen of the South

Scottish Championship
The Tuesday results felt important for the outcome of the Championship season. It’s obviously too early to be awarding titles or relegating sides, but Killie’s dramtic win at bitter rivals Ayr saw them leapfrog Inverness into top spot and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Tommy Wright’s men hold that position between now and May.
A late Oli Shaw penalty secured the 1-0 win at Somerset for Killie on Tuesday and the phrase ‘statement of intent’ sprung to mind. Ayr away is as difficult a trip this Kilmarnock side will face given the sheer importance of the derby and to come away from it with a win and on top of the pile could have ramifications for the mentality of a side stacked with talent, though still trying to gel after a very busy summer that begun with relegation. It felt like the sort of win that helps a side click together and should that be the case it could be devasting for the rest of the Championship. I don’t need to remind you of the talent at Wright’s disposal and I’m sure Allan Johnston will be aware of the attacking prowess of the likes of Shaw, Callum Hendry and Rory McKenzie.
I mentioned at the start of the season that I was fairly optimistic about Queens’ transfer business, but it could leave them facing an inconsistent season given the lack of experience brought in. That is ringing true currently, with the men from Dumfries hovering ominously over the relegation spots 11 games in. They’ve failed to win their last three games (and they were fairly winnable too – Ayr, Morton and Hamilton) with their only win in their last five Championship games coming at home to basement dwellers Dunfermline. They’ve lost seven of their 11 league games up to this point and I fully expect that to get worse at Rugby Park as they travel to face a side who look fully in the ascendency.

Prediction: Kilmarnock to Win
Alloa v Airdrie

Scottish League One
It’s off to the division of goals for the penultimate selection on the acca, with League One being a regular provider for this market this season. Two sides who have been in the goals already this campaign do battle at Recreation Park and I suspect they’ll stay true to their records and deliver us a tick.
League One itself is averaging 3.2 goals per match, far and away the best record in the top four divisions across Scotland, and these are two sides we have to thank for such a strong record. 6 of Alloa’s 11 ties have landed Over 2.5 Goals this season, with each of their last four in all comps seeing this market land (the four ties have actually borne witness to 22 goals!). They’re looking very leaky at the moment, but they have a highly skilled front line that wouldn’t look too out of place a division higher. Alloa will see this game as a good chance to bridge the gap between themselves and those occupying the Play-Off spots, with an immediate return to the Championship on Barry Ferguson’s agenda, meaning this could be quite the tussle between two attacking sides keen on promotion to the second tier.
Airdrie are the division’s form side, winning five of their last six games to recover from what was a poor start to the new campaign. They’ve been smashing the goals in too, scoring at least twice in each of those aforementioned five wins. Only two sides have a better Over 2.5 Goal record in League One than Airdrie’s 82% (Nine of their 11 games have landed in our needed market – including the reverse fixture between these two). This game looks perfectly set for some goals between two of the most attacking sides in the division, neither with a strong defence and both keen on getting all three points.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals
Kelty Hearts v Stirling

Scottish League Two
On League Two how I missed you. After a week break to allow for the Scottish Cup, League Two is back and what a fixture it’s thrown out – top versus second in what could prove to be a pivotal tie in the season, even just 10 games in. Six points separate these two and I do fear we may see a premature end to the title race this weekend.
Stirling are putting up a valiant fight to stop free-spending Kelty’s charge towards League One but the six-point gap at this stage of the season does emphasise the difference in quality between the two sides. They’re unbeaten in their last six across all competitions but it’s fair to say they’ve not played anyone as good as Kelty in that run and it should be brought to an end at Central Park this weekend.
Kelty are just a phenom. They’ve dropped points just twice this season and are still unbeaten on league duty, breezed through in the Scottish Cup last weekend and look every bit the Champions Elect I and many expected them to be this season. Stirling are probably as tough a test as they’ll face in league duties – and their draw of Montrose in the next round of the Scottish Cup will be an interesting acid test of their capabilities against higher level opposition – but they should have more than enough to wrap up all three points, deliver us a tick on the acca and take another big step towards playing in League One next season.

Prediction: Kelty Hearts to Win
