⚔️ Tottenham v Man City Head-to-Head
Tottenham have been something of a bogey team for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in recent seasons and Spurs provided tricky opposition for the champions again in the reverse Premier League encounter between the clubs in early December.
Despite racking up 17 attempts to Tottenham’s eight and winning the xGF battle by 2.60 to 0.5, City were held to a 3-3 draw by Spurs at The Etihad Stadium in a pulsating tussle a few weeks before Christmas.
That was the seventh time in nine previous Premier League meetings that City dropped points in a league fixture against Tottenham, and their visits to the white-clad part of North London have been particularly troublesome for the Mancunians.
Indeed, City had lost an incredible five matches in a row at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since the new venue opened in 2019 before they finally broke their hoodoo with a narrow 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round triumph there on January 26th this year.
City needed an 88th-minute Nathan Ake effort to get over the line on that occasion, though their haul of 18 attempts to Tottenham’s one that evening suggested the visitors should have won with more to spare.
Manchester City managed to earn a mammoth 24 corners across their previous two encounters with Tottenham this term, while both meetings wobbled along the edge of indiscipline, with eight cards brandished in December’s league affair and another eight shown in January’s FA Cup clash.
Tottenham talisman Son Heung-min has been a chief protagonist in this fixture and the South Korean has scored eight previous career goals against City. Indeed, the 31-year-old even notched at both the right and wrong end when Spurs drew 3-3 with City in December. Son was a notable absentee through injury when City beat Tottenham in the cup, however.
📊 Tottenham Form and Stats
Tottenham’s form has been wilting in the final third of the season and the club’s players look like they are running out of gas a little with Ange Postecoglou’s intense tactical gameplan taking its toll.
They just about managed to scrape past Burnley at the weekend (2-1) in a triumph that relegation the Clarets, though their run of four-straight defeats before that prompted the usually positive Postecoglou to rant about the need for “changes” to his squad.
Tottenham have been leaning heavily on their home form for points this term having won only six of their 18 assignments on the road, and only Arsenal and Liverpool (14) have won more Premier League home fixtures than Spurs so far (13).
In fact, the Londoners have won a hugely impressive nine of their last 11 games on their own patch, however, despite collecting plenty of points, sailing has rarely been smooth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the hosts usually have to work very hard for their spoils.
100% of their last 14 tests at home have produced goals at both ends and in six of their last seven home wins, Tottenham fell behind and had to claw their way back.
Defensive wrinkles have proven difficult to iron out in general and Tottenham rank all the way down in 13th for xGA (60.00) this season. Their problems at the back can be explained away in part by their commitment to attacking football under Postecoglou however, and Spurs have failed to score in only three of the 36 league fixtures they’ve contested since August.
As per the norm, Son Heung-min has been setting the standard in that area and the talismanic attacker has lodged 17 goals and nine assists in the top tier so far.
James Maddison (12), Richarlison (15) and Brennan Johnson (14) are also on double-figure goal contributions for the campaign.
📊 Man City Form and Stats
Manchester City have cranked Premier League form into overdrive since Christmas and the defending champions’ staggering run of 16 wins and three draws in their last 19 fixtures in the division has put them on the cusp of landing their fourth title in a row.
City pummelled Fulham 4-0 in their last outing in another contest they dominated from minute one to 90, allowing a solid Cottagers outfit to register just a single attempt on goal in London.
That was the sixth time in seven league fixtures that City managed to rattle the net at least four times, while Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut also scored exactly four goals in three of their last four away assignments.
City’s four-goal salvo at Craven Cottage allowed them to leapfrog title-rivals Arsenal as the league’s current top scorers (91-89), while only Liverpool have better shots per 90 and xGF figures than the Cityzens.
Guardiola’s troops clocked an xGF of at least 3.00 in four of their last seven Premier League fixtures, while the xGA of 0.10 they conceded against Fulham last weekend was their lowest figure in a single sitting in the competition this season so far.
Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol scored twice in that 4-0 success over the Cottagers and 15 different City players have chipped in with Premier League goals this term, highlighting the vast array of weapons in Guardiola’s armoury.
Recently-crowned FWA Player of the Year, Phil Foden, hit his 17th Premier League goal of the campaign in the same win at Craven Cottage. The 23-year-old – who scored against Tottenham in December – has been enjoying the most prolific season of his career in 2023/24.
💰 Tottenham v Man City Best Bets
Tottenham made hard work of beating bottom-feeders Burnley in their last outing and their run of four straight defeats before that against Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle suggests they should find the going tough again against City on Tuesday.
With the curse of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium broken in January and an incredible sequence of 16 wins from 19 matches difficult to dismiss, City are the more backable outfit in the match result markets, even if the prices in that direction are tight at 1.36.
Backing Man City to win and both teams to score meanwhile, could offer a more attractive prospect at 1.99. Both teams have scored in each of Tottenham’s last 14 home fixtures and while they failed to notch against City in the cup in North London in January, they should offer more threat with fixture specialist Son Heung-min back in tow.
Elsewhere, City have serious credentials in the over 6.5 team corners arena at 1.80. They won 14 corners when they last visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January and another ten when they hosted Spurs in December. Expect more dominance in that department here.
