Introduction
Led by former Manchester United manager Ralf Ragnick, goals are on the agenda for Austria at Euro 2024. Since the switch to international football, the German manager has got Austria playing some enterprising, high-energy football. Having managed 20 games across the Nations League, Euro qualifiers and friendlies, Austria have failed to score in just a single game against France in the Nations League.
A rocky start under Ragnick in the Nations League saw Austria manage just one win from six games, the team seem to have gelled since, having lost just one game since December 2022. Ragnick will have to contend with the key omission of captain David Alaba, who is set to miss the Euros with an ACL injury.
A centre back pairing of Kevin Danso and Max Wober seems the most likely partnership in the absence of the Real Madrid defender – both of which had no issues in the most recent fixture for Austria. A clinical display saw Austria run out 6-1 winners against Turkey thanks to a hat-trick from Michael Gregoritsch. The Turks were unable to contend with the intensity at which Austria played.

🔮 Euro 2024 predictions
Tournament Prediction: Quarter-Finals
You can back Austria to reach the Quarter-Finals @ 3.50 on Paddy Power.
Austria are a team to keep an eye on, they’ve put together some notable performances under Ragnick and have taken some good results. In December, they beat Germany 2-0, in what was an extremely convincing performance – they can definitely cause an upset.
Despite the massive loss of skipper David Alaba, Austria seem to blend of talent and experience, mixed with good chemistry and understanding within their squad.
If they can hit the ground running, they certainly have the potential to escape the group of death.
Austria Euro 2024 Qualifying Data
📖 How they qualified
Austria were mightily impressive during the qualifiers, and really exemplified their potential under Ralf Ragnick – they come into the Euros as dark horses. They finished second behind Belgium in Group F with a record of six wins, one draw and one loss. The draw and loss both came against Belgium, although the results deserve context. Belgium and Austria played out a 1-1 tie in Brussels back in June 2023, in what was an evenly contested and cagey affair.
The reverse fixture came in October 2023 in Vienna, with the Balgians emerging 3-2 victors. After taking a 3-goal lead within the hour, Belgium were cruising despite creating just 0.99 xGF. Austria fought back, and clawed the score back to just the single goal deficit. It was not enough for a point, although Ragnick might take confidence from their ability to create chances – 17 shots they managed, amounting to 1.92 xGF.
The Austrians have shown they can compete with the big boys, and they will have to. Progressing from Group D will be no easy feat – France are formidable, Netherlands are solid, and Poland shouldn’t be underestimated.
👕 Players to watch
Austria will lean on Champions league finalist Marcel Sabitzer, having scored the most goals and picked up the most assists for Austria in the qualifiers, with four and two to his name. Michael Gregoritsch and Christoph Baumgartner should work in an attacking partnership, with the former taking up a large portion of Austria’s shooting chances in the qualifiers.
Gregoritsch took (and scored) a penalty the most recent game for Austria, although that was in the absence of Sabitzer. The Dortmund man took responsibility for penalties, free-kicks and corners in the qualifying rounds.
Konrad Laimer is another player who has had an incredible season. Having established himself as a regular at Bayern, his performances in the Champions League against Real Madrid were really important, despite the result. He has typically been deployed in front of RB Leipzig duo Nicolas Seiwald and Xaver Schlager, the latter who was involved in the most defensive duels in the qualifiers, with 10.67. The trio will have a lot of defensive work, especially given the high-intensity pressing.
