Netherlands v Iceland
📅
Kick Off: Monday 10th June at 19:45
🏆
Competition: International Friendly
The Netherlands will host Iceland at Stadion Feijenoord on Monday night, in their final friendly match before the beginning of Euro 2024.
Iceland struck a surprise by beating England 1-0 at Wembley last week, and will provide a thorough test for the Dutch.

The Netherlands have been drawn into a tough Euro 2024 group, alongside France, Austria, and Poland in Group D. Expectation is fairly realistic amongst Oranje supporters, but there are many Dutch fans who believe that Ronald Koeman’s pragmatic style of play is against the Dutch values, and doesn’t get the best out of the team.
The draw has also dampened enthusiasm somewhat, particularly after losing home and away in the qualification process to France, including a heavy 4-0 defeat in Paris. The Austrians are popular dark horses ahead of the whole tournament, while the Dutch will be confident they’ll have the beating of Poland.
Iceland head into this match full of confidence after another historic win over England last Friday. They fully deserved their victory at Wembley, after complimenting a smart tactical approach with bravery to take risks when in possession.
This match will provide a tough test for the Dutch, ahead of their first match in Germany.
Netherlands v Iceland Best Bets
Jeremie Frimpong has been one of the outstanding players in the Bundesliga all season and Ronald Koeman seems to have finally accepted that he should be used from the start in the national team.
Frimpong may be used on the left of a front three at the start, but if not, he will still be a very attacking left wing-back, who will be concentrating on getting into the box and providing opportunities. He is priced much bigger than other Dutch goal threats here, despite the fact that Frimpong notched against Canada on Thursday. He is worth supporting both in the player to score market at 4.0, and also in the player to assist market at 2.75 – both selections available on Paddy Power.

⚔️ Netherlands v Iceland Head-to-Head
This match has been played 12 times in international football history, with the Netherlands winning nine of them. However, interestingly, Iceland have won the last two.
The Iceland victories came during their golden era as they qualified for Euro 2016 through a group that knocked the Dutch out. This was an achievement in no small part due to Iceland winning both clashes between the nations, 2-0 at home, and 1-0 in Amsterdam.
The problem is that there is only one player surviving from that night in Amsterdam in 2015, the captain, Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Aside from the former Burnley man, it’s a new look Icelandic team.
📊 Netherlands Form and Stats
The Netherlands have won seven of the last ten matches, including a few thrashings, 4-0 against Canada on Thursday, 4-0 over Scotland, 3-0 against Greece, and 6-0 against Gibraltar.
The Netherlands have traditionally been pretty solid in home friendly internationals as well. They lost in 2020 to Mexico and again in 2017 to England, but they are nations of a much higher calibre than Iceland.
Perhaps of more interest in Netherlands’ recent form is the number of goals that have been involved in their matches. Eight of their last ten matches have seen over 2.5 goals, though only four have seen both teams score. The Netherlands have averaged 2.9 goals per match over that ten game period.
📊 Iceland Form and Stats
After failure to qualify for Euro 2024 through the regular group stages, Iceland were attempting to qualify for the finals through the play-offs. They almost managed it as well, beating Israel 4-1 in Budapest, then taking the lead against Ukraine as well, before eventually going down 2-1 losers.
Iceland were nowhere near automatic qualification for the Euro finals, winning only three matches in ten, two of which were against Liechtenstein. Indeed, apart from mauling Liechtenstein in Vaduz, Iceland lost all of their other away matches in the group very comfortably.
Obviously, they recorded a great win at Wembley on last week and the team looked well organised and dangerous on the break as well, but this match looks likely to prove a step too high for Iceland.
Looking back through Iceland’s record, the last time that they avoided defeat against a nation that would be around the Top 10 of the FIFA rankings, before their recent triumph over England, was way back in 2018 when they managed a draw in France in the Nations League.
