Swindon Top South West Club
Antepost punting is fun and exciting. There are dozens of markets available to dive into.
But still, don’t let the value of a shorter-priced selection look slip past you. Finding a 3.0 shot in a three-team market may not be as exciting as the bigger priced ‘darts’, but value is value, and this bet is certainly that.
Swindon line up against Cheltenham and Newport County in a low grade, three-team race hidden away in ‘other markets’ for League Two.
Newport, 3.75 outsiders, are going into the new season with new ownership, a rookie manager and a different transfer policy to what’s come before. Former Swansea man, Huw Jenkins is the new owner. He’s appointed Portuguese born coach Nelson Jardim, who he crossed paths with at Swansea, to lead the new-look Newport.
12 new permanent signings have arrived, all but one are 24 or under, many on two-year contracts, not many with EFL experience. Add to this that, at the time of writing, last season’s top scorer Will Evans is still on the squad list but is expected to be announced as an incoming at Mansfield at any moment.
We don’t mind the new ideas, actually we like that there’s a clear identity forming at the club. But this kind of change requires patience and the new-look Newport need to show they can walk before they run. Survival this season will be looked upon as a success and then the club can build further. They are destined to be amongst the lower bracket of the league.
Cheltenham have been put in as 1.91 favourites in this market on Sky Bet. This feels way off. Cheltenham are also going through a period of change. Like Newport, they have a new manager in the dugout, Michael Flynn takes over from the departed Darrell Clarke. Gary Johnson returns to the club as Director of Football, bringing along his brother as a key scout.
A lot of last season’s side, relegated from League One, have been moved on elsewhere – Rob Street heads back to League One with Lincoln, Lewis Freestone to Stevenage and Elliot Bonds stays in League Two but with Fleetwood.
Most alarmingly, Aidan Keena headed back over the English Channel to sign for St Patrick’s Athletic on League of Ireland transfer deadline day without a fee involved. Others have moved on too, Luke Southwood, Sean Long, Liam Sercombe to name three. Their replacements have question marks. Cheltenham have mainly signed players who have played for Gary Johnson before, played for Michael Flynn before or played for Cheltenham before. They look ripe for a season of struggle.
Swindon, themselves under new management in former Lincoln boss Mark Kennedy, have a much more stable and sturdier look to their squad. Ryan Delaney, Grant Hall and Harry Smith are all new signings who offer strength at both ends of the pitch. Will Wright and Ollie Clarke arrive after getting promoted from the league last season with Crawley and Mansfield respectively, Rosaire Longelo is an exciting arrival from Accrington and the squad already contained quality in the likes of Sean McGurk and Paul Glatzel.
An upper mid-table finish feels very achievable for this Swindon outfit and that should see them lead the trio of sides in this market.
