Sheffield United have the Premier League in their sights once more as they come into the Steel City derby from the automatic promotion places. Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday have been inconsistent this term, but are part of a very heavily congested midtable.
Who will emerge victorious in this first derby in five years and carry precious momentum into the final international break of 2024?
⭐ Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday Best Bets
Sheffield United have been impenetrable at home in recent matches and despite this being a derby, and the old adage that form goes out of the window, there does seem to be a class edge between these two Sheffield teams at the moment.
Backing Sheffield United to get the better of Wednesday is a good bet at 1.87. United would usually be shorter than this against a team with Wednesday’s position and points haul, and with United having only conceded in one home game so far this season, they should be confident of keeping Wednesday at bay here. For someone who may prefer a longer price then the win to nil price of 3.0 may appeal.
For those looking into the cards market for a derby, this hasn’t been the best derby for cards in recent meetings. However, there hasn’t been a Steel City derby for over five years, so this trend may not hold.
Wednesday players have been shortened massively ahead of this one, but Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic look the best value, at 2.87 and 3.0 respectively. Souza has been booked in almost half his matches this season, including two for arguments, and Ahmedhodzic is just back from a ban, so will feel that he has room for maneouvre on that front.
Michael Smith may well start for Sheffield Wednesday and if he does, then he will be worth backing for a card. He is 4/1 pre-match, but he has three yellows already in a small number of minutes, including two for arguments.
👕 Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday Predicted XI
🔍 Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday Players to Watch
🔴 Harrison Burrows
The signing of Burrows from Peterborough has proven a good move as the 22-year-old has played all 1080+ minutes of the Championship season so far.
Recently, Burrows has become more of an attacking threat as well. He has hit at least one shot on target in each of his last three matches.
🔴 Vinicius Souza
Vini Souza is potentially Sheffield United’s most important player. He plays every minute that he is available, but he has already served a suspension for five yellow cards.
However, since his return he has been able to go straight back on the offensive, and has committed six fouls in those three matches. This season he is averaging 2.33 fouls per 90, and has committed three or more fouls on six occasions already.
🔵 Josh Windass
Often Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest weapon, Josh Windass has been on a good run of getting shots on target recently.
He has had two shots on target in Wednesday’s last two matches, and has managed at least one in five of his last six starts for the club.

💻 Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday Form and Tactics
Sheffield United come into this match inside the promotion places. Their recent form has seen them win their last three matches, scoring twice in each of those games. They haven’t conceded a goal at home since a 2-2 draw with QPR on August 17.
A solid defence has been the most striking feature of Sheff Utd’s season so far. The Blades are down in 15th for xG creation over the season as a whole, which is a slight concern, but, so far, has been outweighed by their excellent defensive work which sees them joint-second in the league with Burnley, having conceded only 11.5 xG in their 14 matches.
Sheffield Wednesday have seen some big highs and dramatic lows already this season, with some tight, low scoring matches thrown in for good measure.
Overall, Danny Röhl still wants to play a high octane style of running, pressing, and enterprising attacking play, but has definitely made a slight shift towards a more practical style that may suit his current playing squad more.
This has led to a decrease in chance creation, but also chance concession, until a big 2-6 defeat to Watford two weeks ago. However, the Owls have since bounced back with a very confident 2-0 win at home to Norwich, which makes it seven points in their last four matches.
They are also unbeaten in three away from home, winning 2-1 at Portsmouth and Coventry, as well as drawing at Bristol City.

🏁 Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday Ref Watch
- Referee: Lewis Smith
- Averages 24.83 fouls given per match this season, which is quite high in comparison to his peers, but he is only averaging 2.83 yellow cards per fixture in the Championship for 2024/25, which is on the low side
- Smith has refereed two Premier League matches this season so is obviously well thought of despite his inexperience, having only refereed at this level 17 times.
- His overall record in the EFL and Premier League combined reads 3.68 yellow cards per 90, and 21.7 fouls given per 90 across 69 matches.
