Brighton v Southampton
📅
Kick Off: Friday 29th November at 20:00
🏆
Competition: Premier League
Southampton make the relatively short trip along the south coast to face high-flying Brighton in Friday night’s Premier League game and we’re expecting another action-packed 90 minutes between the two clubs.
The Seagulls sit fifth in the Premier League table while the Saints will remain rock bottom even if they win at the AmEx.
⭐ Brighton v Southampton Best Bets
The Seagulls are unbeaten in their last five league meetings with Southampton, winning home and away against the Saints last season.
At least three goals have been scored in five of the last six encounters between these two clubs, while each of Brighton’s last five outings across all competitions as well as three of Southampton’s last six matches have also produced over 2.5 goals.
👕 Brighton v Southampton Predicted XI
🔍 Brighton v Southampton Players to Watch
🔵 Joao Pedro
Brighton’s Brazilian forward Joao Pedro has scored and assisted in each of his last two Premier League appearances against Bournemouth and Manchester City.
The 23-year-old has six goal involvements in the league so far this season, despite having only featured in six games due to injury, and his good form for the Seagulls has seen the former Watford man earn a call-up to the latest Brazil squad.
🔵 Joel Veltman
Nobody in the Brighton, nor the Southampton, squad has been fouled more than Joel Veltman. The Seagulls’ Dutch defender has drawn 27 fouls is his 11 Premier League appearances so far this season, 13 more than his nearest teammates Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari who have both been fouled 14 times.
Veltman is a solid defender who has won 15 of his 22 tackles and knows how to win a free kick against an opposition’s attacker.
🔴 Flynn Downes
Flynn Downes has featured in 11 of Southampton’s 12 league games this season and the combative midfielder has picked up four yellow cards so far.
Nobody has committed more fouls for the Saints in the Premier League this season (19) than Downes who is averaging 1.7 fouls per game this season, so you can see why we have selected the Southampton man to commit at least two fouls against Brighton players on Friday.

💻 Brighton v Southampton Form and Tactics
The division’s youngest manager, Fabian Hurzeler, has tended to play a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2 system with Brighton this season and there is a good chance that he will go with a 4-4-2 on Friday as he has done in four of Brighton’s last seven home games in league and cup.
The Seagulls have only enjoyed the majority of the possession in two of their last seven matches but did record their highest xG of the season (2.3) in their last home game against Man City despite only having 40% of the possession.
Russell Martin has used a 5-4-1 tactic in four of Southampton’s last five league games with limited success. The Saints have lost three of those games and last time out against Liverpool, they only had 38% of the possession and ended the game with an xG of 1.3 which was their fifth-highest in the league this season.
