Norrkoping v Malmo
🏟
Saturday 16th July– 2:00PM KO
This is a match that goes by the name of ‘The Working Class Derby’. The two teams share a sporting and social rivalry, rather than anything geographical.
The 12-time Allsvenskan champions Norrkoping finished the 2022 season firmly in the middle-of-the-table after three defeats in their final four matches. That underperformance was expected to be improved upon this time around but they have continued to stumble.
The home team come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Degerfors, which extended their winless run of form to six matches as they languish in the bottom-half of the table. Rikard Norling will be feeling the pressure from the notoriously vocal and aggressive Norrkoping support.
Malmo’s poor season since the departure of Jon Dahl Tomasson continued in unconvincing fashion in midweek. The reigning Swedish champions advanced into the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League but were given a major scare by Vikingur Reykjavik. They won the game 6-5 on aggregate and that does mean they have scored three goals in each of their last three matches.
Milos Milojevic’s side had been low-scoring throughout the campaign but, potentially sparked by the departure of Anel Ahmedhodzic, they have opened up in recent matches and they will be expecting to break back into the top three sooner rather than later.
Given that these two sides share a rivalry, as well as Malmo’s recent up-tick in terms of scoring and conceding, this should be an entertaining match for the neutral.

Djurgarden v IFK Varnamo
🏟
Saturday 16th July – 4:30PM KO
Djurgarden have been one of the strongest sides in Swedish football for the majority of the 21st century and they will be consistently expected to challenge for the title, backed by their vociferous supporters.
They come into this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting second in the table after a comfortable 2-0 win away at bottom-of-the-table Helsingborg last weekend. That was their fourth successive victory in the league as they continue their impressive recovery after a poor start to the campaign. They lost their opening two matches but have since won eight and drawn three of the subsequent 12.
In doing so, they have done it with a touch of flair, too. Their 28 goals so far this season, in 14 matches, means they are the league’s top scorers and that is backed up by their expected goals rate of 1.94 per match.
Varnamo were promoted to the top-flight for the first time ever after winning the Superettan last season. However, Jonas Thern, the man that led the club to that triumph left the club and was replaced by Kim Hellberg ahead of the 2022 campaign.
The visitors come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw with fellow newly-promoted side GIF Sundsvall last weekend. That result extended their winless run of form to four matches as they hover above the relegation places.
The form, home advantage and underlying data all suggests one result for this one and that is for the home side to be firmly on top.

Hammarby v Elfsborg
🏟
Sunday 17th July – 2:00PM KO
These are two of the biggest sides outside of ‘The Big Three’ in Swedish football and both of them will be expecting to challenge for the top three and the European spots this season.
Hammarby began their campaign extremely well but they have since drifted down and out of the top three ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures. Elfsborg sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table but just four points behind their opponents ahead of this one.
The home team come into this on the back of a 3-0 hammering of one of the so-called ‘big three’ last weekend in Goteborg. Hammarby have lost three times in their opening 13 matches but two of those defeats came in three matches prior to that aforementioned victory last week. Elfsborg have drawn three of their last four matches as they struggle to put together a run that can challenge the top three but the visitors are now unbeaten in their last six matches – all six of those games have featured both teams scoring.
Hammarby’s troubles have been brought about by quite a few injuries occurring and they remain without the likes of Richard Magyar, Dennis Collander, Oliver Dovin and Jon Gudni Fjoluson. Only Emmanuel Boateng is set to be missing for the away team.
These are two fairly strong and seemingly well evenly matched sides so it could be a close contest but given Elfsborg’s recent trends, it should also be entertaining.
