St Mirren v Kilmarnock (Premiership)

Few supporters visiting St Mirren Park on Saturday will be expecting a classic when the home side welcome Kilmarnock to the Paisley venue. St Mirren have been going very nicely this season, with their success built on a gritty home record that is as effective as it has been ugly, while Killie have been simply hopeless away from home.

St Mirren have four home wins to their name this season, including a shock 2-0 success over Celtic. Indeed, all those victories have come in a streak that they are still on. During this time, they have conceded just a single goal, with Livingston’s late consolation a fortnight ago ending a run of 404 minutes without conceding a home goal.

By contrast, Kilmarnock have scored only once on their travels this season, while they have lost all five of their away matches. These have typically been tight affairs, though. Indeed, they have gone down 1-0 on three occasions on the road in the league. 

A similar type of encounter should be forecast here. St Mirren are a strong home opponent but hardly a prolific side, even with their confidence levels now up. Kilmarnock, meanwhile, will look to keep things tight and would likely see a draw as a positive outcome. 

St Mirren should take the win, but the margins are likely to be slim between success and failure. A single goal will go a long way in this match and the prospect of a scoreless tie should not be dismissed either.

Dundee v Ayr (Championship)

Dundee’s 10 games in the Scottish Championship have produced a total of 32 goals, which is the highest figure in the league. Ayr, meanwhile, are just two back from the Dark Blues, having played only nine games so far this season. When they meet at Dens Park on Saturday, then, goals appear on the menu.

Certainly, there was plenty of excitement when the clubs met at Somerset Park earlier this season, with the Honest men running out 3-1 winners on that occasion. It was the third fixture in succession between these clubs that has produced at least three goals.

On the face of things, it seems that Dundee’s entertainment value has dropped in the past couple of games as only four goals have come from their last two fixtures, each of which produced two strikes. However, these games were against Hamilton and Arbroath, both of whom are defensively focused teams. Prior to those games, four of Dundee’s previous six league matches had brought over #32.5 goals.

Ayr do not fall into that bracket at all. With 19 goals to their name, only league leaders Partick Thistle have been more prolific than them this season. What’s more, they are coming off the back of a remarkable 5-0 win over Queen’s Park last weekend that will only have given them more confidence to approach this match.

Only two of Ayr’s league matches this season have brought under 2.5 goals. Those games came against Arbroath and Inverness, who are eighth and 10th in the league respectively for total goals scored in their games.

Alloa v Airdrie (League One)

Alloa will look to take advantage of an out-of-sorts Airdrie when they play host to the Diamonds on Saturday. The visitors lie two points clear of the Wasps in the League One table, but have played an extra game.

Brian Reid’s home side come into this match off the back of a chastening 3-0 loss against Dunfermline last weekend. While the final score paints a harsh scoreline, Alloa dominated the second half and had it not been for a fine performance by the visiting goalkeeper, they might well have taken something from the match to present what had been a five-match undefeated run.

Among that unbeaten sequence was a 1-0 win over Airdrie in the Challenge Cup, but it would be wrong to read too much into that outcome given both sides rotated significantly for that game.

Of more significance, though, is Airdrie’s extended period of disappointing form. After making an express start to the season, they have won just one of their last seven competitive fixtures – and that came against a Clyde side that is simply dreadful at the moment. 

Last weekend, they were involved in a roller coaster game against a struggling Queen of the South side in which they escaped with a 3-3 home draw following a red card to Cammy Ballantyne who is now suspended. With a thin squad, options for rotation for player-manager Rhys McCabe are slim and it’s difficult to see where they will get the inspiration to improve an away record that shows they have won only one of their last seven on their travels in all competitions.

Annan v Stranraer (League Two)

Saturday’s match between Annan and Stranraer pitches together two teams who have been among the goals this season. Both these clubs have played 10 league matches this term, with their games averaging 3.4 goals and 3.7 goals respectively. Indeed, eight of the 10 games that these clubs have played have brought three or more strikes in them.

While Stranraer won a home match against Annan 1-0 on the opening day of the season, they have been far more exciting since then. Indeed, seven of their last eight matches have produced at least four goals, including a run of three successive 2-2- draws. Last weekend, they were beaten 3-2 at home by Elgin, underlining the fact that they are good going forward but not nearly as strong at the back.

Annan, meanwhile, have been similarly entertaining. They have conceded at least twice in each of their last four league games and last weekend pinched a late equaliser with 10 men to draw 2-2 at Stenhousemuir.

History suggests that the 1-0 result earlier this season was a blip. Last term, three of the four matches between these clubs produced at least three goals, including both fixtures at Galabank. Annan won the latest of these 4-1 in March and will be hoping for a repeat this time around. 

Both teams have scored on the last six occasions these clubs have met in Annan, while seven of the nine previous fixtures have seen over 2.5 goals. The odds of history repeating itself are very attractive.
