Panaitolikos v Panathinaikos

Despite dropping points for the first time this season, Panathinaikos’ 1-1 draw against fierce rivals Olympiacos on home soil felt like a victory. The hosts were awarded a penalty 12 minutes into the second half’s stoppage time, with Andraz Sporar converting from the spot to rescue a point with his third goal in three games.

Panathinaikos were outplayed by a struggling Olympiacos, who created more and better chances. In fact, the Greek Super League leaders recorded only six shots, just two of which were on target. Moreover, after losing key winger Aitor Cantalapiedra to long-term injury, they also saw in-form forward Sebastian Palacios pick up a knock, one which will sideline him until the World Cup.

Palacios was Panathinaikos’ most lively player in the final third before limping off the pitch and the man who scored two of their five goals in the 5-1 victory over Volos before the derby. That was the one of the only two games in which Ivan Jovanovic’s side managed to score more than two goals thus far.

No team have scored more goals than Panathinaikos this season, but the league leaders average less than two goals netted per game. Meanwhile, they boast the best defence in the league, having conceded just four goals, three of which came against the rest of the big-4 (Olympiacos, PAOK and AEK Athens).

They will try to get back to winning ways against Panaitolikos, who have lost against Olympiacos, PAOK and AEK in three games where they registered just two shots on target, conceded five goals and didn’t even come close to scoring one.

This time, Panaitolikos will face the best defence in the league and they will struggle to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, Panathinaikos won’t have it easy without Aitor and Palacios in a game where we shouldn’t expect more than two goals to be scored. In fact, only one of the last four games between the two teams ended with more than 2.5 goals scored.

AEK Athens v OFI

AEK failed to take advantage of Panathinaikos dropping points on Sunday, as they drew 1-1 away at Asteras Tripolis and failed to reduce the gap from the Super League leaders in the table. Matias Almeyda’s side were superior in Tripoli, but they struggled to break down a compact Asteras defence, this being the first time they dropped points in eight games.

In fact, the move to their new stadium back in October offered AEK Athens a much-needed boost in morale in the last few games. AEK have won all their four games at their new ground, scoring nine goals and conceding one. Their duel against OFI is a must-win fixture, as they are set to face Olympiacos on the road in their last game before the World Cup and they must get back to winning ways before the derby.

AEK have won six of their last seven games against OFI, who have been struggling to rediscover their form this season. Despite playing well and snatching a 1-1 draw away at theoretically stronger side Aris, OFI were extremely poor again on Saturday and lost 2-0 to Ionikos. The visitors were sitting bottom of the table before the game, this being their first victory in 11 games so far this season. Bottom-placed OFI have conceded eight goals and scored five in five games away from home, but they don’t have what it takes to cause trouble to AEK, who are expected to outplay Valdas Dambrauskas’ side and grab a comfortable win on home soil. Meanwhile, only three of the 22 games the two teams have played so far this season have ended with under 1.5 goals.

Levadiakos v Olympiacos

Olympiacos failed to grab all three points away at Panathinaikos due to a controversial penalty decision late into the second half’s stoppage time. Everyone at the club were frustrated after the team failed to get what they deserved from the derby, with Olympiacos ultras releasing an official statement to announce that they will take thousands of fans to the Levadia Stadium for Wednesday’s duel against second-bottom Levadiakos.

Olympiacos will look to build on their momentum after an inspired display away at the Greek Super League leaders. They will push for a victory from the off in their bid to get back to winning ways after drawing with Panathinaikos and losing at home to Nantes. Michel may rotate the team to rest some starters ahead of Sunday’s derby against AEK, but Olympiacos have enough depth to secure a victory in Levadia and could even receive a boost from the bench after the break if needed.

The reigning Greek champions have won 22 of their last 25 games against Levadiakos, who have received a boost in morale after recording their first win against Atromitos at home and drawing 0-0 away at Panaitolikos. Under new coach, Jasminko Velic, they have managed to improve in defence, but their clean sheet against Panaitolikos was just their first this season.

Levadiakos do not have the quality to cause an upset against Olympiacos, who will try to take advantage of the away support to clinch a comfortable victory and avoid trouble in Levadia ahead of the crucial game against AEK. Olympiacos have scored at least two goals in each of their four games against the rest of the bottom five and they are expected to do so against second-bottom Levadiakos too.
