Schalke v RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig look every bit like potential Bundesliga winners after holding Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw on Friday night. With that, Marco Rose’s side have extended their unbeaten run to 14 games across all competitions. The games are coming thick and fast now in Germany with an Englische Woche this week, but Rose and Leipzig will be hoping to be able to build on their performance.
Christopher Nkunku won’t be fit enough and so it’s important that other players in the final third step up. From a creative standpoint, Dominik Szoboszlai did just that against Bayern Munich with 5 key passes, one of them being an assist for Marcel Halstenberg.
Operating in their preferred 4-2-3-1, defensively, RB Leipzig shouldn’t have any problems against Schalke on Tuesday. Willi Orban and Josko Gvardiol have created an excellent understanding ahead of Janis Blaswich, whilst Mohamed Simakan has developed into one of the best right-backs in the Bundesliga.
It’s difficult to judge performances after just one game back after such a long time off and although lethargic towards the end, Leipzig did show in spells that they can trouble the bigger teams.
They’re up against a Schalke side that just can’t seem to find the net. The Royal Blues failed to convert any of their 10 chances, but they’ll be buoyed by the performance of Soichiro Kozuki who made his debut against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend, registering 3 shots and 2 key passes.
Rose’s players will absolutely believe they can push Bayern Munich for the title in May, but they must overcome Schalke with ease on Tuesday. With the superior squad and chemistry, Leipzig can close the gap to just three points before Bayern host Cologne later in the evening.
Hoffenheim v Stuttgart
After an impressive start to the Bundesliga season, quite worryingly Hoffenheim sit just three points above the relegation playoff. They’ve also lost Georginio Rutter to Leeds United, but that did mean a start for the talented 17-year-old, Tom Bischof. Andrej Kramaric also returned but could only manage 30 minutes against Union. Against Stuttgart, André Breitenreiter is again likely to field his preferred 3-4-3.
Winless in their last six Bundesliga games, three of those game have finished Under 3.5 goals. Of their eight home games this season, five have finished Under 3.5 goals and against Stuttgart, they too aren’t in the best goalscoring form at the moment.
Stuttgart appointed Bruno Labbadia during the off-season and his first game in charge saw the former Hamburg and Wolfsburg coach operate in a 4-3-3, Silas and Tiago Tomas providing support for Serhou Guirassy, who operated as a lone forward. It’s a system that Stuttgart have rarely played this season and against Mainz, they converted just one of their six chances.
Labbadia was brought in to steady the ship and so don’t expect them to be creative in the final third. Instead, they’ll allow Hoffenheim to control the possession and will look to hit them on the break, showcased by their 3 key passes at the weekend. Four of Stuttgart’s last five Bundesliga games have all finished with Under 3.5 goals. Don’t expect this to be a spectacle with a 1-1 draw a potential outcome here. Not losing points is key for both teams at the moment, and both would settle for a low-scoring fixture. Under 3.5 Goals represents good value.
