Lamia v OFI
Lamia’s 2-0 defeat to Greek Super League leaders Panathinaikos last weekend didn’t come as a surprise. Sitting bottom of the table with just 12 points from 21 games, Lamia have netted just eight goals thus far and have failed to score in their last four matches. They are the team who boast the worst home record in the league, with just one win, four draws and five defeats in 10 games. In fact, no Greek side have picked up fewer points than Lamia (7) on home soil this season.
Their last home victory came back in October against a struggling, second-bottom Levadiakos, who have managed just one point more than Lamia thus far. On Monday, they will face an in-form OFI side, who have lost just one of their last seven games. Despite having not registered more than two wins in that period, OFI have kept four clean sheets and avoided defeat against stronger sides Panathinaikos, Volos, PAOK and Asteras Tripolis, all of whom are above the Heraklion-based side in the table.
Only six teams have managed more points on the road than OFI (10) this season. Despite sitting 10th with 20 points from 21 games, OFI have significantly improved under new(ish) coach Valdas Dambrauskas, who has helped them collect 14 of their 20 points. They have been defeated in just two games away from home, losing 2-1 against reigning champions Olympiacos and 3-0 away at main title contenders, AEK Athens.
OFI may well grab all three points on Monday, as they have done in three of their last four visits at Lamia Stadium. Having lost just one of their last eight games against Lamia, the visitors should be expected to avoid defeat to a team who have won just one game this season.
Asteras Tripolis v PAOK
After failing to take their chances and drawing 0-0 at home against Olympiacos, PAOK remained third in the Greek Super League table, five points behind leaders Panathinaikos. Razvan Lucescu’s side struggled before the World Cup, as new signings needed their time to gel during this transition season. Yet, they have improved after the break, as they have won six of their nine games in 2023.
In fact, PAOK have not lost a single game across all competitions since late October, when they were defeated to a superior AEK Athens. PAOK have managed to bounce back mainly due to their solid defence, having kept an impressive 12 clean sheets in their last 15 games. The reason why they haven’t picked up more points is that they don’t boast neither the attacking prowess nor the cutting edge of second-placed AEK and leaders Panathinaikos.
Lucescu’s men will head to Tripoli in their bid to grab a statement win against a solid Asteras side. It will be a duel between the two most compact defences in Greece this calendar year. Apostolos Mantzios’ side have conceded just one goal in their last four games. The most impressive stat is that no team have allowed in fewer goals on home soil than Asteras this season. In fact, Tripoli have conceded just three times at home in 10 games.
Their main issue, however, is that they are struggling to create in the final third, as only two teams have scored less home goals than Asteras (8) thus far. Only 11 goals have been scored in Asteras’ 11 home games in 2022/23, with stronger sides Olympiacos (0-0), Panathinaikos (1-0) and AEK Athens (1-1) scoring a combined one goal and grabbing just one point in Tripoli this season. The game against PAOK will be no exception, as Asteras are expected to prioritise avoiding conceding over pushing for a goal. This one should be a closed duel with just a few goals.
AEK Athens v Levadiakos
Matias Almeyda rested nine of his 11 starters and gave opportunities to players who have barely featured this season, but AEK Athens managed to grab a statement 3-0 Greek Cup victory at home against Olympiacos on Thursday. This was AEK’s 12th straight win at their new ground, where they have conceded just two goals so far this season.
No team has been more dominant at home than AEK this season, as Almeyda’s men have dropped just three points in 10 home games in 2022/23. Having kept 12 clean sheets in their last 13 home duels, AEK are considered as the favourites to win the title this season, especially after defeating all the contenders without conceding a single goal at the OPAP Arena.
Having one game in hand, AEK sit second in the table, just one point behind Panathinaikos. Their duel against second-bottom Levadiakos on Monday will be by far their easiest fixture before the playoffs. Their win against Olympiacos was their first victory against the reigning champions in five years and helped them practically secure qualification to the Greek Cup final.
Tickets will sell out again, as AEK should be expected to cruise past Levadiakos with a comfortable victory on Monday. No team have grabbed fewer points than Levadiakos (3) on the road this season and only Lamia (2) have scored fewer away goals than Jasminko Velic’s side (5) in 2022/23.
AEK have won all their last nine matches against Levadiakos. Not only have they managed to build that impressive winning streak, they have also kept as many as nine clean sheets in that period. This means that the last time AEK conceded a goal against Levadiakos was back in 2016. In their bid to overtake Panathinaikos in the table, AEK should be expected to grab a comfortable victory and clean sheet against a poor Levadiakos side, who have failed to score in four of their last five games.
