Newcastle’s Swedish striker Alexander Isak has been brilliant so far this season, particularly in the opening game against Aston Villa. He scored two in that one and looked the business, he struggled a bit more against Man City and Liverpool but this is understandable when you look at the quality of those teams.
Isak has averaged 1.77 shots on target per 90 this season and when you consider his opponents that is very impressive. He is definitely one to keep an eye on for shots on target. With his height and athleticism, he’ll be great for set-pieces.
🛑 Brighton defensive stats: Nastier than you think
Brighton’s Seagulls may be a bit nastier than you think and they won’t just come for your fries. They have picked up nine yellow cards in their three outings so far this season, with half of their starting lineup carded in their match against Wolves.
It could be attributed to them losing the majority of duels in each of their matches, winning only 43 of 91 against Luton Town, 57 of 116 versus Wolves and 41 of 88 against West Ham. Considering the level of opposition, this is slightly worrying and with lost duels come late challenges and fouls. Unsurprisingly, fouls are rampant across the team regardless of position.
Estupiñan and Milner both pick up over a foul per match at 1.33 and 1.74 respectively. Billy Gilmour in midfield picks up on average 1.11 per 90, whilst wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Solly March commit 1.03 and 1.92 fouls respectively. In fact, only Gilmour and March of said five players have not been carded this term.
🛑 Newcastle defensive stats: Ballet shoes or wellies?
With Brighton covering 74.5% possession on average at home so far this season, Newcastle will be hoping to snatch the ball away in duels and in moments of error by Brighton. They are likely to use explosive counter-attacking football if such opportunities arise, exploiting Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almirón’s blistering pace. Unsurprisingly, Joelinton (2.40) and Bruno Guimarães (2.07) top the charts in tackles per 90 with the former winning 2.0 per match. However, the most tackles per 90 from the likely starting lineup comes from Dan Burn with 3.0. The trend of the three police officers in the middle continues, with Joelinton (3.20), Bruno Guimarães (2.76) and Tonali (2.00) once again topping the charts for fouls committed per 90, with Anthony Gordon (2.86) also getting in on the act.
